Fundraiser participation is an educational experience
In this day and age of budget cuts, fundraising is a necessity, BUT, it doesn’t have to be evil!
Besides the obvious monetary reward there are other positive benefits to be gained. A child’s
active participation can provide a wealth of knowledge!
Communication skills; talking to adults, being able to explain the product and intelligently
answer questions is an invaluable talent. The digital age is robbing young people of this ability.
While going door to door is not encouraged, unless you know the homeowners, children can still
have the experience. They can talk face to face to family, their parent’s friends and co -workers,
neighbors or anyone that you encounter in the course of the day. Encourage kids to present the
fundraising products themselves. The learning opportunity is lost when the parents do it for
them.
Manners; use this opportunity to reinforce the power of being polite and respectful. Encourage
your children to address the people they are presenting the product to as. Mr., Mrs., Ms. Remind
them to thank everyone for their time, whether or not they bought something.
Selling will boost self-confidence. There is a tremendous sense of accomplishment to be had
when completing a sale. It will also teach a child how to handle rejection. Not everyone will
make a purchase, that’s okay, learning how to deal with ‘NO” and keep going is something that
will serve the children well as they become adults.
Talk to successful entrepreneurs, you will discover many of them got started selling as kids. I
know I did! The art of negotiation, the ability to think on my feet, even my penchant for
organization are rooted in my childhood sales experiences.
The skills and experience acquired participating in a fundraiser can help a child be better
prepared to navigate life.
