Whole Numbers
               Multiples

 What will we learn today?
 • determining if a number is a multiple of
   a given 1-digit number,
 • listing the first 12 multiples of a given
   1-digit number,
 • finding the common multiples of two
   given 1-digit numbers.
We have learnt about

FACTORS in the last lecture.
It’s time for us to take it to a new level.

            Let’s try to learn

        some new concepts today!

               Multiples
What is a multiple?
The result of multiplying a number
by an integer (not a fraction).
In the multiplication table, we can see that
     3 6 9 12 15 18 21 24 27 30
         Therefore, 12 is a multiple of 3,
               because 3 × 4 = 12

But 7 is NOT a multiple of 3
Factors and Multiples
• Factors and multiples are associated with
  multiplication.
• Factors are what you can multiply to get a
  number.
• Multiples are what you get after multiplying a
  number by an integer.

       factors 3 x 4 = 12 multiple
List the first 12 multiples of a
      given 1-digit number

For example, “4”
The first 12 multiples are
  4 8 12 16 20 24 28 32 36 40 44 48
What is the 8th multiple of the digit ‘4’?

The first 12 multiples are
 4 8 12 16 20 24 28 32 36 40 44 48
What is the 8th multiple of the digit ‘4’?

The first 12 multiples are
 4 8 12 16 20 24 28 32 36 40 44 48

32 is the 8th multiple of the digit ‘4’.
Find the common multiples of
   two given 1-digit numbers

Find the common multiple of 3 and 8 which is
              less than 30.
Find the common multiples of
   two given 1-digit numbers

Find the common multiple of 3 and 8 which is
                 less than 30.
          3 6 9 12 15 18 21 24 27 30

Step 1:
List down the multiples of 3.
Find the common multiples of
   two given 1-digit numbers

Find the common multiple of 3 and 8 which is
                 less than 30.
          3 6 9 12 15 18 21 24 27 30

          8 16 24 32 40 48 56 64 72 80

Step 2:
List down the multiples of 8.
Find the common multiples of
   two given 1-digit numbers

Find the common multiple of 3 and 8 which is
                 less than 30.
          3 6 9 12 15 18 21 24 27 30

          8 16 24 32 40 48 56 64 72 80

Step 3:
          Circle the common multiple(s).
Find the common multiples of
   two given 1-digit numbers

Find the common multiple of 3 and 8 which is
                 less than 30.
          3 6 9 12 15 18 21 24 27 30

        8 16 24 32 40 48 56 64 72 80

        The common multiple is 24.
