               Money

What will we learn today?
• multiplication and division of money in
  decimal notation
• solving word problems involving the 4
  operations of money in decimal
  notation
There are different
denominations (value) of
coins and notes we use
in Singapore.
How do we write in cents and dollars
  10 cents $0.10
  20 cents $0.20
  30 cents $0.30
  40 cents $0.40
  50 cents $0.50
  60 cents $0.60
  70 cents $0.70
  80 cents $0.80
  90 cents $0.90
   1 dollar $1
Try this out!
1. Tommy bought a pair of pants for $25
and two shirts for $18 each. He gave
   the cashier two fifty-dollar notes.
How much change did she receive from
   the cashier?

Step 1: 2 x $18 = $36 (2 shirts)

Step 1: 2 x $18 = $36 (2 shirts)
Step 2: $36 + $25 = $61 (shirts and pants)
Step 3: 2 x $50 = $100
Try this out!
1. Tommy bought a pair of pants for $25

cashier two fifty-dollar notes. How much
change did she receive from the
   cashier?
Step 1: 2 x $18 = $36 (2 shirts)
Step 2: $36 + $25 = $61 (shirts and pants)
Step 3: 2 x $50 = $100
Step 4: $100 - $61 = $39
She received $39 from the cashier.
Try this out!
2. Kate bought a blouse and 2 skirts. She
gave the cashier $100 and got back $39.25
as change. A skirt cost twice as much as a
blouse. How much did a skirt cost?
(1) $12.15
(2) $20.25
(3) $24.30
(4) $40.50
Solution
2. Kate bought a blouse and 2 skirts. She
gave the cashier $100 and got back $39.25
as change. A skirt cost twice as much as a
blouse. How much did a skirt cost?

Step 1: $100- $39.25 = $60.75
Solution
2. Kate bought a blouse and 2 skirts. She
gave the cashier $100 and got back $39.25
as change. A skirt cost twice as much as a
blouse. How much did a skirt cost?

Step 2: $60.75 ÷ 5 = $12.15
Since a skirt cost twice as much as a blouse,
there are 5 units in total.
Solution
2. Kate bought a blouse and 2 skirts. She
gave the cashier $100 and got back $39.25
as change. A skirt cost twice as much as a
blouse. How much did a skirt cost?

Step 3: $12.15 x 2 = $24.30
Since a skirt cost twice as much as a blouse,
we have to multiply by 2, to get the cost of
the skirt.
Solution
2. Kate bought a blouse and 2 skirts. She
gave the cashier $100 and got back $39.25
as change. A skirt cost twice as much as a
blouse. How much did a skirt cost?

Step 3: $12.15 x 2 = $24.30

Answer: $24.30
