Whole Numbers
           Multiplication

 What will we learn today?
 • Multiplication as repeated addition
 • Solving 1- step word problems
Take a look at this example.
There are 4 boxes.
Each box has 3 balls.
How many balls are there altogether?

     3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12
A few ways to represent the answer.

3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12
      4 threes = 12
4 groups of 3 = 12
    4 x 3 = 12
   (We use “x” to represent „groups of‟)

   There are 12 balls altogether.
Let‟s try another question.

 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 18

               6 threes = 18

         6 groups of 3 = 18
4 groups of 2
4 X 2
                8
4 + 4 + 4 + 4
4 twos

2 groups of 5
2 X 5
5 + 5
                10
2 fives
