         Multiplication

  What will we learn today?
  • Multiplication as repeated
    addition.
Here’s an example.
There are 4 boxes.
Each box has 3 balls.

 3 + 3 +3 + 3 = 12
There are 4 boxes.
Each box has 3 balls.

 3 + 3 +3 + 3 = 12
There are 4 boxes.
Each box has 3 balls.

 3 + 3 +3 + 3 = 12
      4 threes = 12
There are 4 boxes.
Each box has 3 balls.

 3 + 3 +3 + 3 = 12
      4 threes = 12
 4 groups of 3 = 12
There are 4 boxes.
Each box has 3 balls.

 3 + 3 +3 + 3 = 12
      4 threes = 12
 4 groups of 3 = 12
              4 x 3 = 12
There are 4 boxes.
 Each box has 3 balls.

  3 + 3 +3 + 3 = 12
       4 threes = 12
   4 groups of 3 = 12
               4 x 3 = 12
There are 12 balls altogether.
There are 4 boxes.
Each box has 3 balls.

      4 x 3 = 12
There are 12 balls altogether.
There are 4 boxes.
  Each box has 3 balls.

         4 x 3 = 12
4 x 3 = 12 is a multiplication sentence.

We use “x” to represent „groups of‟.
Let’s try another question.
