Civil Services Prelims Exam
Prelims is the first stage of the UPSC CSE process. It is a screening test to select the student
s for the further selection process. Prelims exam comprises two objective type papers of 200
marks each. Only those who manage to score more than the cut-off declared by the UPSC fo
r that particular year will be summoned for the next level of examination. However, the marks
scored in Prelims will not be counted for arriving at the final merit list. There is negative marki
ng of (1/3rd of Maximum Marks) for every incorrect answer.

General Studies Paper-2 (CSAT) Syllabus:
Comprehension.
Interpersonal skills including communication skills;
Logical reasoning and analytical ability.
Decision-making and problem-solving.
General mental ability.
Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude, etc.) (Class X level)
Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency, etc. – Class X level).

The official cut-off for the Prelims will be released once the exam is conducted. The Prelims
2021 cut-off for the General category candidates was 87.54 and of Pre-2022 was 88.51.

Preparation Strategy for UPSC Prelims
The following strategy will help candidates to score well in the IAS prelims exam.
•Current Affairs are an important part of UPSC Prelims. Ideally, candidates should prepare 12
to 15 months’ worth of current affairs.
You can prepare current affairs from Yojana magazine, News papers, EPW, and books.
•Making Notes for the UPSC Prelims and Mains is a must. Having notes in your own handwrit
ing is preferred by some candidates, however, considering the time constraint, you can refer t
he online notes, links, books and online classrooms .
•As the questions in UPSC Prelims are all objective - type, it is essential to practice solving
MCQs during the preparation. You can use various online mock tests, booklet test, previous y
ear question papers.
•Always try to study consistently. Minimum 3 hours a day study will lead you to a good score.
If you do not have time some day or you are not in mood, try to study different topic or study f
or less duration but do not skip the study. It will lead to consistency and boost your morale at t
he time of exam.

Preparation Strategy for UPSC Mains
The UPSC Mains exam is the second stage of the Civil Services Examination. IAS aspirants who
clear the Prelims i.e. those who score above the cutoff in General Studies Paper I and more than
33% marks in General Studies Paper-II (CSAT) are eligible to appear for the UPSC Mains.
As per the revised pattern, the UPSC Mains 2023 will comprise nine theory papers (essay descrip
tive type). Out of the nine papers, only seven will be counted for merit ranking.
Candidates also have to choose one optional subject for UPSC Mains.
The maximum marks for the UPSC Mains exam are 1750 (7 papers * 250 marks each). All papers
are of three-hour duration.

Important information regarding the UPSC Mains and UPSC Mains Syllabus
•An IAS aspirant’s marks in the UPSC Mains and IAS interview determine his/her final rank in the
merit list
•The UPSC Mains intends to assess the depth of a candidate’s knowledge. Hence, marks will only
be given for “relevant, meaningful, and succinct answers.”
•The questions in UPSC Mains test aspirant’s basic understanding, ability to analyse and “view on
conflicting socio-economic goals, objectives and demands.”
•Although UPSC maintains that for General Studies papers (Paper II to Paper V), a “well-educated
person will be able to answer them without any specialised study,” candidates are advised to go thr
ough previous year UPSC question papers to ascertain for themselves whether they need ‘speciali
sed study.’
•Candidates are allowed to use Scientific (Non-Programmable) calculators in UPSC Mains if neede
d.
•The level of examination for the optional subjects in UPSC Mains will be equivalent to an honours
degree (between bachelors’ and masters’ level). Only for engineering subjects, Law and Medical S
cience, the scope is limited to the bachelors’ degree level.

The final stage of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Exam is the IAS int
erview or the UPSC Personality Test.

Timing: Two sessions per day ( Forenoon session 9:00 AM onwards, Afternoon session 1:00 PM o

CDS Exam Eligibility
The candidates must be well acquainted with the CDS eligibility and fulfill each criterion to procee
d further in the selection process. There are four factors included in the eligibility criteria, which are
physical standards, nationality, education qualification, and UPSC CDS age limit.
Physical Standards: The aspirants who have applied for different posts in the CDS should be me

Nationality: To be eligible for the CDS exam, a candidate must fit be a citizen of India, a subject of

The exam is conducted by the Indian Air Force (IAF) twice a year to recruit Class 1 Gazetted Officer
s in Flying and Ground Duties for both Technical and Non-Technical Branches.
AFCAT Eligibility
Nationality: The candidate opting to apply for the exam must be a citizen of India as per the Indian
citizenship act, 1955.
Marital Status: Candidates below 25 years of age must be unmarried at the time of commencement
of the course. Widows/ Widowers and divorcees (with or without encumbrances) below 25 years of
age are also not eligible.
Educational Qualification: All the candidates who wish to appear for AFCAT 2023 must hold a bac
helor's degree in their respective discipline. The AFCAT qualification criteria vary from post to post.
AFCAT Age Limit
The age limit prescribed for AFCAT exam is 20 and 24 years for the flying branch and 20 to 26 years
for the Ground Duty posts. Relaxation in age limit is given to the candidates belonging to reserved c
ategories. During this period, a candidate can attempt 16 times and can clear the AFCAT exam.
