Do you feel that your privacy is limited due to
your use of social networking sites?

 Important to communication because SNS are a
major way in which our society communicates
with others, yet through my research I have
found that many people feel that SNS limit our
privacy which is bothersome to those who use
  them.
 People would feel that their privacy was being
compromised through their use of social
    networking sites
 The majority of people who took the survey
would be in the age group of 20-24
 More females than males would take survey
 People will utilize privacy settings
 Their reasoning for implementing them will be
to avoid their pictures and postings they think
will hinder their chances for certain jobs & fear
    of family members seeing them.
 People feel their privacy is limited because of social
    networking sites.
 People use privacy settings in order to gain some
privacy, but they know it is not always guaranteed.
 Because social networking sites are so common now,
people are becoming more weary of what they post as
far as pictures and comments because they know it can
    potentially be used against them
 Ex: potential employers, family members, school officials, etc.
 Although people claim they know the repercussions of
posting certain images & comments, some people
(especially younger adolescents) do not understand
that once something is posted, and they’re utilizing
privacy settings it does not mean that there will not be
    consequences.
 Ex: Later in life those same pictures they didn’t think
were inappropriate at the time could resurface and
       have a negative effect.
 Pictures involving alcohol use, etc.
 This is why it is important to realize how little privacy
          social networking sites actually provide.
 Survey
 Series of multiple choice, yes or no, and open
    ended questions.
 Eight questions all together
 39 people took the survey

 I think that having various types of questions
allowed for people to elaborate where
necessary as well as be straightforward, which
    seemed to be effective.
First asked age group
   Age 15-19 = 10.3%
  Age 20-24 = 66.7%
  Age 25-29 = 12.8%
  Age 30-34 = 2.6%
  Age 35-39 = 0%
  Age 40 and over = 7.7%

Age is important because it gives perspective on who
the majority was who took the survey.
 Asked which social networking sites they used
    most often.
                Social networking sites used
                         most often

                                       Facebook
                                       Twitter
                                       Instagram
                                       None
 46.2% said YES
 53.8% said NO
*Went against my expectation
I gave an option to elaborate on this question if
people felt it was limited and only 17 people
responded. The results varied from feeling
their was a lack in privacy settings to
experiences with their profile getting hacked
   into.
Which privacy settings do you use?
                           hide albums & pics
                           (65.6%)

                           hide comments & other
                           postings (50%)

                           profile cannot be
                           searched (18.8%)

                           only specific people can
                           see entire profile (68.8%)

                           approve postings to
                           page(31.3%)

                           approve those who
                           want to view page
                           (18.8%)
                           none (3.1%)
 The previous pie chart is contradicting the
question of whether or not people thought their
privacy was limited due to using social
    networking sites.
 If people did not think that their privacy was
limited to using SNS, why did so many people
    implement privacy settings?
 In the last question of the survey, people were
asked to clarify why they used privacy settings.
 The most common answers for why people
used privacy settings was because they were
afraid that their future employers would /
    could use it against them.
 Felt uneasy about random people being able to
see their profiles. Privacy settings gave them a
    peace of mind.
 Realize that once something is posted there is
no telling who is copying, using, altering, etc.
    the content of your page.
 The results of my survey were a close representation of the
information I gathered in my research.
 People were weary of similar issues in my research and in
    my survey.
 Some of the answers I expected to get turned out not to
    happen.
 The larger implications of this survey are that people DO
feel that their privacy is compromised, but because of
privacy settings they feel more at ease.
 A contradiction of my research and survey was that people
utilize privacy settings to avoid people seeing certain
things, but the research said that people are understanding
that even with privacy settings, privacy isn’t guaranteed.
 Change the wording on some questions
 I think the wording on some questions confused
        people.
 Example: Asking if people thought their privacy was
limited, majority said no yet people still said they
            implemented privacy settings.
 Try and reach out to a bigger sample size
 I posted it on Facebook & asked to have it sent out to
the class, but next time I would print it and hand it
        out in the library, etc.
 Example: I only had a sample size of 39 people and the
majority of them were ages 20-24.
 There were some issues that were out of my
    control such as--
     Some people skipped questions
 Some people didn’t elaborate where asked to
 A lot of answers were very vague
**By people skipping some questions it technically
made my sample size even smaller.
