This document provides background information on four absolute monarchs who ruled in the 16th-18th centuries: Ivan the Terrible of Russia, Peter the Great of Russia, Catherine the Great of Russia, and Louis XIV of France. It discusses how each ruler seized and consolidated power, implemented reforms, and contributed to modernizing their respective countries through Westernization or centralizing authority. Editor's Notes
His mother, Queen Anne was named regent and Chief Minister Mazarin was a guide.
Louis did not appoint a new chief minister….consolidated power unto himself
Versailles cost billions of dollars by today’s standards, bled his country dry
Louis was the first of many absolute monarchs in France.
How?---Versailles visits bc they gained prestige by become court servants rather that by fighting or building influence far from Paris….he could keep an eye on them
Money- bc they became poorer and had to rely more on the King
