Figurative Language (the things you like to call your little brother or sister)
Similes A simile is a figure of speech that compares and finds a similarity between two different things. Similes use the words “like” or “as” Example My brother is as annoying as a mosquito
Metaphors A metaphor is a figure of speech that is also used to find a similarity between two different things. They are commonly used to describe things. DOES NOT use the words “like” or “as” Example I could have eaten more pizza if my mom hadn’t been such a pig.
Descriptive language Descriptive language mainly uses adverbs, adjectives, metaphors and similes. Adverbs describe verbs. Think of words that end in “-ly” Adjectives describe nouns Descriptive language adds color to your writing. You will put people to sleep immediately if you don’t use it.
Example of not using descriptive language The boy walked to school. He was late for his first day of school because his brother had started crying. He was afraid that his teacher, Mr. Otomo, would be angry with him. Would you say this is fun to read? Or maybe a little boring? Make a list of the things you could start using descriptive language for. Let’s rewrite this, and add a bit of “color”
