2. The Cooperative Movement in
India was born out of distress &
turmoil that prevailed in last
quarter of 19th century.
The International Cooperative
Alliance (ICA) defines a Cooperative
as “an autonomous association of
persons united voluntarily to meet
their common economic, social, &
cultural needs & aspirations through a
jointly-owned & democratically-
controlled enterprise.”
Cooperatives were visualized
to play role of a balancing
factor between public &
private sectors.
