For any real numbers a and b, if ab = 0, then either
a = 0, b = 0, or both a and b = 0
Steps to Solving Equations by Factoring:
Original Equation 9x2 + x = 0
Factor out the GCF x
Equation should be in the form of ab = 0 x(9x + 1) = 0
Zero Product Property X = 0, or 9x + 1 = 0
Solve each equation: x = 0, or (solve) 9x + 1 = 0
Solution Set: 0, - 1/9
4. Example 1 : 3m(m - 4) m = 0, m = 4
Example 2 : 4y2 = 28y 4y(y - 7) = 0, y = 0, y = 7
Example 3 : x2 + 6x = 7 Rewrite so equation is equal to 0
Factor the trinomial
x - 1 = 0, or x + 7 = 0, x = 1, or x = -7
Check: 12 + 6 = 7, and (-7)2 + 6(-7) = 7
