The purpose of this study was to analyze and compare the techniques and tactics used by winners and non-winners of sudden death round in Taekwondo matches.

2. INTRODUCTION
Until the Athens Olympics 2004 in case of
a tied score the judges were to decide for
the winner by superiority
Since 2005 in case of a tied score a 4th
round is acquired and the first player to
score wins the match
In case no one scores the golden point
judges decide for the winner by decision of
superiority

3. Electronic Body Protectors
In the year 2008 EBP were used for
the first time in intercontinental TKD
championships

4. Technical profile
Limited studies are available regarding
the technical and tactical profiles of
TKD matches
 Studies including data regarding the
“sudden death” round has not been
published yet

5. PURPOSE
The purpose of this study is to analyze
the techniques and tactics used during
the sudden death round in Taekwondo
matches
To compare the data obtained between
winners and non winners

6. AIM
The knowledge of potentials of certain
techniques and tactics for a positive
outcome of a match is of high
importance for coaches and athletes.

7. SUBJECTS
86 high level Taekwondo players
- 56 male athletes
- 30 female athletes

 Lee (1983) - BR most frequently used technique
 Kim (2006) – BR achieves the highest kicking speeds
 Matsushigue et al. (2009) – BR scores more frequently
 Kong et al. (2000) – FR is faster than BR and might be
more effective
 Kazemi et al. (2006) - male non-winners had the highest
percentage of offensive kicks
 Kazemi et al. (2009) – females are 8 times more likely to
win by superiority and scored more with offensive kicks

Athletes using higher number of
techniques and apply offensive tactics
are more likely to score in the sudden
death round
EBP seem to encourage athletes to
fight more offensive since
counterattacks are not able to score if
not powerful enough
