Harry Coumnas was initially reluctant to join the US Army during World War I but was later forced to. While fighting in France with his troop, heavy combat broke out with German forces during which 8 of his soldiers were killed or wounded. Coumnas single-handedly fought off the Germans, killing some with his rifle and others with his pistol when they charged at him with bayonets. For his bravery, he was awarded the Medal of Honor by the US government and after the war returned home and opened a school for his community's children.
