A Look at ASPIRe NY, Inc., by Keith Pillich
1. A Look at ASPIRe NY, Inc., by Keith Pillich
Autism Spectrum Peer Integration and Recreation, or ASPIRe NY, Inc., was founded
in 2004 by Deborah Garrelts and Julie Marks. This group provides individuals
with Asperger's syndrome and high-functioning autism the opportunity to
socialize.
Over the past eight years, ASPIRe NY has grown to feature numerous options for
its participants, which have more than tripled since its inception. Outdoor
activities include biking, minigolf, corn mazes, and picnics. Members can spend
time indoors and bowl, play board games, or watch movies. In addition, its
counselors teach individuals with special needs about proper behavior, job
interviews, body language, safety awareness, and manners. Because many of the
individuals who sign up for this group are teenagers, ASPIRe NY selects high-
school-aged peer mentors who do not have disabilities to enhance the experience.
