Textual Analysis By Keiron Simpson
Eden Lake http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bnrr73pNnfU Running time: 1 minute 47 seconds. Through this trailer there are many different shots, from different angles and perspectives. There are approximately 100 shots through this 1 minute 47 seconds trailer which indicates that the shots are sometimes split second shots. As the trailer goes on the editing pace increases along with the sounds which are used with a soundbridge so that the music runs through the trailer and the pace of the song also differs to the scenes that are on show. The scenes flash with a red scale which connotes danger, and also shows that these scenes are gory, contain blood. Through the start of the trailer there is a voiceover which is used to narrate why this couple has gone to this “disused quarry”. Which is used well as this is out of the way which is where you would expect a horror/thriller film to be as it is out of the way of the public so that they are not found. Inter-titles are used for this trailer also to help narrate the film even further so that people know what the story is about these are used for the first 20 seconds and then are not features until 1 minute 6 seconds. The inter title sequences are very short and do not have more than a line of words on in order to build the suspense. There is then a title sequence at the end of the trailer this is a cliff hanger, as it is after someone bursts into the door creating a lot of suspense. The inter title sequences are in an orange colour which suggests burning and danger. The costumes that are used in the film are common clothes that everyday people would see however the older couple do not dress the same as the young group as they are generations apart, and the kids wear tracksuit bottoms, etc as he couple will wear jeans, shirts, etc. The props that are used and shown in this trailer is knives, a car, dog, pedal bikes and a ‘boom box’. Which are associated with horror films and kids.
Eden Lake This is the poster that advertises the film Eden Lake, this poster will be everywhere in order to try and promote this film from, billboards, bus stands and outside the cinema. Sometimes they even make the cardboard cut out. The title of the film is in bold red text so that it stands out clearly from the background. They use the black background well as they use this to make a light appear from the back to create silhouettes so that the evil characters are not made clear insinuating that they could be anybody, and the light shining on the woman at the from connotes that she is a main part in the film. The poster is set in the woods which is a iconic scene in a horror where someone runs into the woods being followed by the people after him/her/them.
Wolf Creek http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jvTUHiKsOvk Running time: 1 minute 46 seconds Throughout this trailer there are many different camera shots and angles, as they sometimes use the handheld camera shot, and approximately use 80 shots. At the start of the teaser trailer the editing pace is fast as they are at a party with friends, drinking, etc. and as the trailer goes on it slows down in the middle as they arrive and the shot duration increases. There are no songs used at the start it is all from the film and the sounds used are of people laughing and joking around which is what is expected at a party as they are doing shots and jumping into the pool. There is still no song as they arrive at there destination and the sounds are just dialog from the actual film and the sound of the car driving which shows that they have had to drive a long way to get to where they are so this shows that they are nowhere near there home. Then at the end of the trailer there is a fast upbeat sound and screaming as they are hurt by the villain and therefore indicating that this is a horror film and also there are heavy breathing sounds which indicate fear and make the viewer fear fir the persons life that is on screen. The use of inter-titles is used for this trailer to show what is happening in the story as they say that this is ‘the trip of a lifetime’ but ‘in the middle of nowhere’ which has a low tone piano sound, which is considered to be creepy and eerie, over the top to show that this is where things begin to change. The inter-title also tells the viewers that this is based on true stories which is considered scary. The colours that are used in the film are all quite dull colours, and the inter-titles are all in a sandy colour to connote the desert, and the costumes that are used are quite country clothes like surfer wear and hats.
Wolf Creek This is the poster that is used to advertise the film; Wolf Creek. The colours that are used in this suggest that there is a lot of danger in this which is connoted from the yellow which is often seen in danger signs. The female running away indicates danger also. They use the ratings to let people know that this film is very highly rated by the people that have seen this film and they also put the extra detail in that this is based on true events, which makes it sound more freighting as it makes people think about what might of happened and could happen to them adding to the fear. This below poster is another that was used but was not as popular as the one above and they again use the yellow as an iconic colour for danger and use the blood and people’s facial expressions to show that these people are terrified and scared.
The Wolfman http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6N2lZwOQdMI
The Wolfman These are the main posters that were used for the advertisement of the film ‘The Wolfman’ . They use the typical scene in both posters, which are both set in the woods, that are associated with wolf men films, and are usually in rural areas with a small town nearby or none. The first poster above is of the wolfman the shots that are used for these posters tell the target audience about the genre of the film, and make them realise that this film is either a thriller or a horror. With the top poster you can tell the film is about people turning into wolfmen as they have the full moon shining down on the wolfman. They use the colour scheme’s of black, white and red, the grayscale on the main shot suggests that the film is set in the olden days where there is not a lot really known about these creatures but the legend still exists. These posters will either be placed on billboards or on bus stops which will advertise the film to the people that they want to go and watch this film and the people that will be interested in going to see this film, as a result of there research into there audience.
Jennifer’s Body http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LCSzYioSeT0
Jennifer’s Body This is the poster used to advertise the film ‘Jennifer’s Body’ which can be seen as either a horror or a thriller. The colours used in this poster will distinguish to the target audience that this film is a horror with the colours; red, black and white. Which are all typical of a horror film poster and the school desk, whiteboard tells the audience that this film will be set in a high school so that this will appeal to the people at college and people around the age range 15-24 which is usually what horror films are aimed at.
Narrative Themes The narrative themes that this genre, horror, deals with are many things, from gang culture to social deprivation. The horror genre deals with this wide range all depending on the story as they could have a couples trip out and showing there love or they could have a kid that has been bullied and therefore has social deprivation. Typical narrative themes in a horror film include knives and silhouettes which are very typical of horror genres. Another narrative theme of horror films is the victim being chased by the villain which is used to make the audience feel fear, anxiety and a sense of hope that the victim will escape unharmed. In these shots they contain close ups, mid shots and wide shots which all give the impression on whether or not the victim will be caught and this is a technique used called cross cutting shots which creates omniscience depending on the chase they will edit the pace of the shots and the duration of which they appear on the screen.
