2. Combined best practices
3. Draft Code
Setting the Stage for Transformation
Challenges
 Need to focus on the
quality of the student
experience
– Increasing competition
– Quality criteria and ratings
– Rethinking research over
education
 Moving focus from
teaching to learning
Best Practices
1. The “student experience”
2. Education accountability
3. The scholarship of
teaching and learning
4. Student-centred teaching
5. Transnational and
international education
6. Learning-centered
institutions
June 23, 2016Dr. KC Barker 3
Good Practice for Engaged Learners
1. Students are engaged with an institution that provides guidance,
supports and environment focused on learning.
2. Students are engaged by course curriculum that is relevant,
comprehensive, challenging and current, and by clearly defined
intended learning outcomes.
3. Students are engaged by academic staff with demonstrated
competence in teaching, research and service, with particular
attention to transnational education.
4. Students are engaged in a diverse array of learning experiences and
assessment methods aligned with intended program outcomes.
June 23, 2016Dr. KC Barker 4
Code continued
5. Students are continuously engaged in systematic assessment and
documentation of learning.
6. Students and staff are engaged within an environment that fosters
active learning, employs appropriate learning technologies in
appropriate ways, and rewards innovation.
7. Graduates are prepared to engage with the world through
demonstrated accomplishment of subject area expertise,
employability and lifelong learning skills, comprehensive Graduate
Attributes and MQA-recommended Learning Outcomes.
June 23, 2016Dr. KC Barker 5
Implementation
ePortfolio of evidence to support
all “standards”
June 23, 2016Dr. KC Barker 6
IMPLEMENTING THIS
CODE CREATES A
LEARNING-CENTERED
UNIVERSITY!
OUTCOMES / BENEFITS
1. Ability to measure and demonstrate excellence in teaching and
learning for external and internal QA purposes.
2. Future students will be confident in the quality of the teaching
and learning experience they would be exposed to.
3. Graduates would leave with evidence of academic, lifelong
learning and employability skills in an ePortfolio for personal
gain and for Malaysian HCD.
