1. Do you think human traffic encourages or glorifies drug use?
Use any theories studied to explain your answer.
Human traffic is a film which you could
say that some people would see the
positive effects of having drugs on a
night out. Even at the beginning you
see real life footage which has people
on drugs having “a good time”.
Even though they show a come down
of the drugs and drink, it doesn’t
outweigh all the fun that the characters
have.
The hypodermic model, (founded by Cumberbatch and Howitt 1989) encourages this behaviour
as it makes it so appealing to the audience that a few are bound to copy it.
However through the film the director has been clever as there is barely any visual
representation of actual drug use in the film, therefore making it harder for the audience to copy
even if they wanted to.
Moreover, even though it does make drug use appealing you can see the impact it has on
there everyday life. In one review it says that Human Traffic should, “reconsider its message”
but by doing that you aren’t educating some people on a way of life and how some others live.
So effectively it doesn’t encourage or glorify drug use as it only educates the audience and as
there is so little visible drug use it makes it hard to seem glorified
