Editor's Notes
I created this comic on Pixton.com. In it I am imaging that I have to prepare a 3 meeting program on Nuclear Energy for a group of disinterested participants. I want to engage as many different learning styles as possible and I like Howard Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences (Gardner, 1993) because it includes several distinct abilities to consider when planning activities. There are actually 9 abilities as you’ll see in the next slide.
In addition to the talents mentioned in the cartoon –there are 2 more- Naturalist and Existentialist. I like this chart because I work with adults. The chart show typical careers that align with the talents.
If you are interested in hearing Mr. Gardner’s perspective on how to engage students in real learning instead of rote memorization. copy and paste this link to your web browser to view Howard Gardner speaking about the basis for his theory of multiple intelligences. The next two slides contain links to view the Animated cartoons
Copy and paste this link to your web browser to view Ghosts of Nuclear Past and Present By Work In Progress on Goanimate.comIt contains information about the costs of nuclear power compared with fossil fuels in dollars and impact on the environment. As an auditory/kinesthetic learner, Goanimate appeals to me because the information is presented in conversation (linguistic talent). Personally, I’ve always enjoyed learning in discussion rather than listening to a lecture. The main character, Mr. Scorge, is in constant motion and the location changes frequently. This appeals to my kinesthetic talent. My learning style is not a common one, so I have to be very careful that I am not selecting a program because it works for me. This type of presentation will also appeal to those with logical, mathematical talents in it’s cost analysis, Visual- spacial learners will appreciate the creative visuals, Although there is no musical soundtrack, I think I can bring music into the lesson plan. Those with interpersonal and intrapersonal strengths might be engaged by the social and personal implications of the topic.

Washington Utters a Nuclear Lifeby Work in Progress on Goanimate.comThis animation is also engaging to all types of learners for the same reasons as the first. The musical-rhythmic learners might appreciate the reference to Michael Jackson. After viewing both, participants will all be challenged to do some research of their own and choose a side, for or against.
