Nuclear Power Debate Project
MEETING 1 MEETING 2 MEETING 3
Show animations; explain
project; give them the web
links to watch the animations
again and have them develop
research questions
individually. Working the
room, suggest questions if
necessary. If time permits they
may begin research to decide
which side of the debate they
want to be on.
Pro’s and Con’s work in
separate groups to develop at
least five solid points for the
debate. They must develop a
5 minute presentation for the
beginning which may include
audio/visual and a wrap up
statement for the end. They
must also develop visual
displays- either Pinterest or
other photo gallery type
program to make posters
Live debate – invite an
audience and video tape for
intravision
-Or-
In small groups mixing pro’s
and con’s, have them work
cooperatively to create online
video debates using
Goanimate or other similar
tool. Vote on which ones
might be shown on intravision.
Research questions based on MI Theory
What are the real costs of nuclear
energy compared with fossil fuels?
(Logical/Mathematical)
What is “global warming” and how is it
related to burning of fossil fuels?
(Naturalist)
What current day politician/s shares your
opinion about nuclear power? What is their
political agenda? (Interpersonal)
Find a television news clip about or
related to nuclear power and be
prepared to share your opinion about it.
(Linguistic)
What type of music expresses your feeling about nuclear power? Explain. You may
compose something of your own or select something published by someone else,
past or present. (Think about the characters in the animations. What period of music
would they listen to?) (Musical/Rhythmic)
If you lived near a nuclear power plant, how
would it effect you and your family?
(Intrapersonal)
How far into the future do you
think we will be using nuclear
power? Are we doing enough to
protect ourselves from nuclear
waste? (Existentialist)
Name at least one artist who has expressed his/her
ideas about nuclear power? Include a picture of
the artwork in your argument and explain the
artist’s message (Visual/Spacial)

Editor's Notes

  1. I created this comic on Pixton.com. In it I am imaging that I have to prepare a 3 meeting program on Nuclear Energy for a group of disinterested participants. I want to engage as many different learning styles as possible and I like Howard Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences (Gardner, 1993) because it includes several distinct abilities to consider when planning activities. There are actually 9 abilities as you’ll see in the next slide.
  2. In addition to the talents mentioned in the cartoon –there are 2 more- Naturalist and Existentialist. I like this chart because I work with adults. The chart show typical careers that align with the talents.
  3. If you are interested in hearing Mr. Gardner’s perspective on how to engage students in real learning instead of rote memorization. copy and paste this link to your web browser to view Howard Gardner speaking about the basis for his theory of multiple intelligences. The next two slides contain links to view the Animated cartoons
  4. Copy and paste this link to your web browser to view Ghosts of Nuclear Past and Present By Work In Progress on Goanimate.com It contains information about the costs of nuclear power compared with fossil fuels in dollars and impact on the environment. As an auditory/kinesthetic learner, Goanimate appeals to me because the information is presented in conversation (linguistic talent). Personally, I’ve always enjoyed learning in discussion rather than listening to a lecture. The main character, Mr. Scorge, is in constant motion and the location changes frequently. This appeals to my kinesthetic talent. My learning style is not a common one, so I have to be very careful that I am not selecting a program because it works for me. This type of presentation will also appeal to those with logical, mathematical talents in it’s cost analysis, Visual- spacial learners will appreciate the creative visuals, Although there is no musical soundtrack, I think I can bring music into the lesson plan. Those with interpersonal and intrapersonal strengths might be engaged by the social and personal implications of the topic.
  5. Copy and paste this link to your web browser to view Geo. Washington Utters a Nuclear Life by Work in Progress on Goanimate.com This animation is also engaging to all types of learners for the same reasons as the first. The musical-rhythmic learners might appreciate the reference to Michael Jackson. After viewing both, participants will all be challenged to do some research of their own and choose a side, for or against.
  6. Offer approved websites for research
