The Star Sydney recycles over 2 million kgs of glass in 10 years!
Sydney’s premier events and entertainment destination, The Star, chose BottleCycler Australia Pty Ltd as
its preferred glass recycling partner in 2006 and has been using BottleCycler to crush and recycle its used
glass bottles for the past 10 years.
During that period, staff at The Star have crushed and recycled over 2.2 million kgs of glass and prevented
1.3 million kilograms of carbon dioxide emissions from entering the environment. This equates to the
emissions from 350 average passenger cars circumnavigating Australia on Highway 1.
By using BottleCycler to offset its emissions, The Star has also diverted its waste glass from landfill, where it
can take tens of thousands of years to break down.
Amanda Visser, The Star Entertainment Group Manager of Sustainability and Environment explains
how BottleCycler has assisted the Group to achieve its sustainability objectives. “The Star Entertainment
Group is delighted to have been working with Bottlecycler since 2006. We are proud to have diverted over 2
million kilograms of glass from landfill to date achieving estimated carbon savings of 1.3 million kilograms
at The Star Sydney alone. The BottleCycler units have now been rolled out to our QLD operations as well.
Recycling approximately 390 bins of glass per month at The Star, BottleCycler is actively supporting us in
achieving our recycling targets.”
“Glass can be recycled infinite times without loss of quality. Using recycled glass to make new glass saves
not only raw materials but reduces energy consumption.” said Darryl Rainsbury, CEO BottleCycler. “We
congratulate The Star on their recycling achievements and are thrilled to support their ongoing
sustainability objectives by ensuring the glass used in their entertainment and dining facilities together with
The Star Event Centre, is recycled. Functions hosted at this world-class venue range from 20 to over 3000
guests and, can have a significant impact on the environment if not managed effectively” he concluded.
In 2014 The Star Entertainment Group was proud to introduce BottleCycler’s waste glass management
service into its Queensland properties, Treasury Casino & Hotel, Brisbane and Jupiters Hotel & Casino,
Gold Coast. These destinations have already diverted 725,000 kilograms of glass from landfill and saved
approximately 435,000 kilograms of CO2 from entering the environment, the equivalent of a family car
driving 1.5 million kilometres on Australia’s roads.
