Fortnite originally launched as a paid cooperative survival game in 2017 but was made free-to-play after Epic Games saw the success of the battle royale genre. They created Fortnite: Battle Royale, a last-player-standing free standalone game where 100 players fight to be the last one surviving. While Epic Games' other titles featured gritty monsters and gore, Fortnite's designers gave it a more family-friendly Pixar-inspired cartoon style to make it appealing to broader audiences over long periods of play.
