3. INTRODUCTION:
The first space mouse was a comic book character published
from 1953 to around 1956 by Avon Publications. Space mouse
was also the name of a 1959 Universal studios cartoon
featuring two mice and a cat named Hickory , Dickory and
Doc. A second space mouse character was published by Dell
Comic (and later by Gold key Comic ) from 1960 to around
1965.the dell comics version was also featured in a 1960
cartoon produced by Water Lantz entitled the secret weapon.

4. DEFINITION :
The space mouse is a peripheral tool for controlling three
dimensional objects created by computer programmers.
This tool represents part of the vanguard of a class of three-
dimensional mouse products that allow users to use more natural
movements in manipulating three – dimensional mouse objects on a
screen.
A three dimensional mouse has its own system of controls and
its own signals that need to be interpreted by an operating system
and /or application.
It has different modes of operation in which it can also be used as
a two dimensional mouse.
It can controls 3D cameras at different angels to position and
view the objects.
It servers as a man-machine interface , enables the user to
intuitively zoom , pan and rotate models.

7. 1. BALL :
A ball inside the mouse touches the desktop and rolls when the
mouse moves.
2. ROLLERS :
Two rollers inside the mouse touch the ball. One of the rollers is
oriented so that it detects motion in the X direction and the other is
oriented 90 degrees to the first roller so it detects in the Y direction.

8. 3. DISK :
The rollers each connect to a shaft spins a disk with
holes in it. when roller rolls its shaft and disk spin.
4. SENSOR :
On either side of the disk there is an infrared LED and an
infrared sensor .the holes in the disk break the beam of light
coming from the LED so that the infrared sensor sees pulses of
light.

9. 5. PROCESSING CHIP :
An on board processor chip reads the pulses from the infrared
sensors and turns tem into binary data that the computer can
understand.
The chip sends the binary data to the computer through the mouse
cord.

12. ADVANTANGES :
 A mouse works very well for navigating a graphical user
interface. Such as windows.
 With additional buttons and a scroll wheel , increasingly
complex functions can be done from a mouse . These include
opening , closing and minimizing of space objects.
 Space mouse is better for fine movements and
adjustments than most of the alternatives . It is very easy
to grouping , moving and deleting files and even image
editing with software like photoshop.
DISADVANTAGES :
Too expensive (nearly $8000 earlier now reduced to about
$3000 even through manufacturing cost is less than $1000)
Works only if RS232 interface is provided.
The Mac version yet doesn’t support virtual number pad
and on-screen menus.

15. VISUAL SPACEMOUSE :
A most controlling device would be a system that can be
instructed by watching and imitating the human user using the
hand as the major controlling element.

move a robot system in the most natural way . this is called Visual
space mouse.
The system of the visual space mouse can be divided into two
main parts.
Image processing
Robot control
The role of image processing is to perform operations on a video
signal received by a video camera to extract desired information
out of the video signal.
The role of Robot control is to transform electronic commands
into movements of the manipulator.

16. FUTURE SCOPE :
Magellan’s predecessor DLR control ball , was a key
element of the first real robot inspace , ROTEX-(3) , which
was launched in April 93 with space shuttle COLUMBIA
inside a rack of the space lab –D2.
The robot was directly teleoperated by the astronauts
using the control ball , the same way remotely controlled
from ground ( on – line and off line ) implying “ predictive”
stereographics.
ROTEX has often been declared as the first real “Virtual
reality” applications.
The graphics simulation and manipulation of 3D volume
objects and virtual worlds and their combination.
A most intuitive controlling device would be a system that
can be instructed by watching and imitating the user. this
is called the visual space mouse.

17. CONCLUSION :
The features of a space mouse are not only applicable to
the graphic simulation and 3D objects but they will strongly
change the whole world of manufacturing and constructing
technology .
It is also applicable to other areas of science like
chemistry , biology and also entertainment.
No other technology can beat the SPACE MOUSE in its
simplicity and yet high precision.
It is used for 3D manipulation in 6 dof but at the same time
may function as a conventional 2D mouse.
Servers as an intuitive man – machine interface.
Used for design of visual mouse.
