Correcting Double Negatives
Some words have a negative prefix meaning “not,” like un-, in-, ir-, etc.
You must be careful not to accidentally create a double negative in a
sentence when you use these words. There can be more than one
way to correct a double negative.
INCORRECT: Her argument wasn’t irrefutable.
Irrefutable already means “not refutable.”
CORRECT: Her argument is irrefutable.
Her argument is not refutable.
DIRECTIONS: Rewrite each sentence to correct the double negative.
1. That passage of his paper wasn’t irrelevant to his argument.
2. Those donuts are hardly irresistable.
3. Her writing isn’t illegible.
4. The candidate’s position isn’t unsubstantiated.
5. His discovery wasn’t insignificant in the overall scheme of
things.
6. It isn’t uncommon to meet a literary scholar in the jungle.
7. His presentation doesn’t make any nonsense.
