 Eucalypts are a dominant part of
the Australian flora.
Eucalypts, also known as gumtrees,
are the most common plant on the
Australian continent.
The leaves of the eucalyptus tree
contain toxic compounds. This is so
only few animals can eat the leaves
of this tree. These animals are the
koala and the greater glider.
The way eucalyptus trees grow is
also an adaptation.
Many species have wide,
spreading canopies which redirect
the limited rain that falls down the
trunk to concentrate around the
roots.
The leaves also tend to have a
thick, waxy coating which also
reduce water loss.
Eucalypts are adapted to survive
frequent fires by having an
extensive deep root system to both
find water and store adequate food
reserves
Eucalyptus trees are native to
Australia, but they are also found
in the western United States,
especially in Arizona, California,
and Nevada. They can be planted
anywhere where there is a hot, dry
climate.
