Intercession is standing between God and man to mediate on their behalf. It involves pleading with God to avert wrath and see situations from His perspective. Jesus is the ultimate intercessor, standing as the mediator between God and humanity. The document provides biblical examples of leaders who interceded, such as Moses, Samuel, Daniel, Nehemiah, Ezra and David. It argues that intercession is critical today, especially for leaders and those in authority.

THE CONCEPT OF INTERCESSION
Prayer School – DC Makiv
26th
Sept 2013
Presented by Francis Nyero

2. • INTRACEDERE :{ Latin} INTRA means between.
CEDERE means to stand. So standing in between
man and God is intercession.
• Intercession means: To mediate, negotiate,
arbitrate, intervene, plead between God and His
creation – It is a legal mandate.
• To see the need and pain in God’s heart, take
responsibility in repentance and confession for
the cause & boldly plead that His wrath be
averted.
• Taking on the mind of Christ and seeing a
situation as Christ sees it then act accordingly.
• Broadly speaking, intercession is the prayer we
make on behalf of others; individuals, families,
churches, assemblies and nations

3. • What is Intercession?
• Ps.89:14 - Intercession is a legal term. It is a means of
effecting righteousness, justice, mercy & truth – these are the
foundation of God’s throne.
• Mercy & truth go before the throne.
• Mercy triumphs over judgment (Ja.2:13) – God shows it in
the design of the Holy of Holies - Exod.26:34, 30:6, 31:7, 40:20
• The truth - Jo.1:14, 14:6 –
• An arbitrator/intercessor must have understanding of the
laws relative to the subject in question. Jesus’ blood
ratifies/sanctions/approves/endorses/confirms/gives
consents the new covenant.
• An arbitrator is appointed by the judge or by an arbitration
close in a contract. God appointed Jesus to intercede for us.

4. • JESUS THE INTERCESSOR
• Gal 3:20 Now a go-between (intermediary) has to do with
and implies more than one party [there can be no mediator
with just one person]. Yet God is [only] one Person [and He
was the sole party in giving that promise to Abraham. But
the Law was a contract between two, God and Israel; its
validity was dependent on both].
• 1Th 5:18 Thank [God] in everything [no matter what the
circumstances may be, be thankful and give thanks], for
this is the will of God for you [who are] in Christ Jesus [the
Revealer and Mediator of that will].
• 1Ti 2:5 For there [is only] one God, and [only] one
Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus,
09/26/13 4
5. • Heb 8:6 But as it now is, He [Christ] has acquired a
[priestly] ministry which is as much superior and more
excellent [than the old] as the covenant (the agreement) of
which He is the Mediator (the Arbiter, Agent) is superior
and more excellent, [because] it is enacted and rests upon
more important (sublimer, higher, and nobler) promises.
• Heb 9:15 [Christ, the Messiah] is therefore the Negotiator
and Mediator of an [entirely] new agreement (testament,
covenant), so that those who are called and offered it may
receive the fulfillment of the promised everlasting
inheritance--since a death has taken place which rescues
and delivers and redeems them from the transgressions
committed under the [old] first agreement.
• Heb 12:24 And to Jesus, the Mediator (Go-between, Agent)
of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood which speaks
[of mercy], a better and nobler and more gracious message
than the blood of Abel [which cried out for vengeance].
[Genesis 4:10] – 1st
John 5:7-8, John 19:35

6. • Col 2:13 And you who were dead in trespasses and in the
uncircumcision of your flesh (your sensuality, your sinful
carnal nature), [God] brought to life together with [Christ],
having [freely] forgiven us all our transgressions,
• Col 2:14 Having cancelled and blotted out and wiped away
the handwriting of the note (bond) with its legal decrees
(Judgment, announcement, Proclamation, verdict, ruling, order) and demands
which was in force and stood against us (hostile to us).
This [note with its regulations, decrees, and demands] He
set aside and cleared completely out of our way by nailing
it to [His] cross.
• Col 2:15 [God] disarmed the principalities and powers that
were ranged against us and made a bold display and public
example of them, in triumphing over them in Him and in it
[the cross].

7. Intercession, an expression of God’s
love
• John 12:24 - Jesus died to beget us into intercession!
• Rom.8:34 - Jesus died to release the condemned (Jn.3:17-
18) – Redeemed – Eph.1:7, Heb.9:12, 15 - Redemption (in Greek) -
through Jesus’ blood were as follows; (Agorazo – paying the full price for
a slave at the market), (Exoagorazo – bring the slave out of the
market), (Lutroo – Loosening the slave and letting him go),
resurrected, seated at God’s right hand & interceding for
us!
• Isa.53:12 – Jesus made Intercession for the transgressors.
• Heb 7:25 – Jesus’ eternal business is intercession for us,
and He’s the guarantee for our eternal inheritance!
• Rom.8:26-27 – The Holy Spirit makes intercessions for us
and He’s a guarantee of Jesus’ promise! – 2nd
Cor.1:22, 5:5,
Eph.1:14
• Exo.32:10,32 – Moses intercedes for Israel. Shall we
respond to the call to express God’s love through
intercession? 709/26/13

GOD SOUGHT AN INTERCESSOR
• And God saw that there was
no man and wondered that
there was no intercessor,
therefore His arm brought
salvation unto Him…
• Isaiah 59:16

Scenarios that warrant
intercession - EZEK 22:23-31
1. Sums up the wicked/greedy attitudes & hearts
of political, economic and administrative leaders
of the time. Leaders who prey on unsuspecting
public and devour them like lions –vs 27
2. The priests had become one with the world,
didn’t teach but compromised the word of God
and spoke lies – vs 26
3. The Prophets prophecy what people’s ears each
to hear, and cover up sins with their false
prophecy – vs 28
4. The people themselves copied their leaders – vs
29
5. There was no fear of God nor fear of His
judgments09/26/13
10. 10
EZEKIEL 22:30-31
• The Lord waited patiently for someone who
would plead with Him and entreat His face,
quote His promises and advance reasons why
He should not destroy the people.
• Instead of punishing the people as they
deserved, He went out of His way to seek
diligently for an intercessor but found none.
• Therefore He poured out His anger & wrath.
Shall we avail ourselves to bridge the gap so
that our people may be saved!

Intercession, is critical & urgent for Leaders
and those in authority
(1st
Tim.2:1-5 – urgent & critical!)
Scenarios
- 1st
Chr.21:1-7,18 – we must intercede for our leaders!
Satan can cause them to make decisions that attracts
God’s judgment on a nation!
- Acts 13:1-12 – satan targets the seats of power
because he’s interested in the influence leadership
exerts over a people. we must learn to discern and
intervene for leaders who either practice, or are under
the influence of occult, witchcraft, sorcery & other
satanic schemes.
- Jer.29:1-12 – Cities and nations – we must seek the
peace & prosperity of the city and nation because it’s
the only way we are going to prosper!

BIBLICAL EXAMPLES OF LEADERS
IN INTERCESSION
• ABRAHAM THE EXALTED FATHER
GENESIS 18:17
– God reveals his intentions to such
leaders (Psalm 25:14, Amos 3:7)
– Importance of knowing God’s
purposes – key to persistent
intercession
09/26/13
13. 13
MOSES THE PRESIDENT, LAW GIVER,
JUDGE ETC:
• Exodus: 32:31-32
• Such leaders take the place of others before
God in prayer just as Jesus did on the cross
• Such leaders confess the sins of others
before God so that God’s immediate
judgment is averted and opportunity is
given for repentance
• Such leaders are so selfless, desperate and
zealous that they do not care about their
own personal life if others can be helped by
their self denial
09/26/13
14. 14
SAMUEL THE JUDGE, PROPHET AND
PRIEST
• 1st
Sam. 7:5
• His scope of intercession covered the
land, leaders, kings
• Had the boldness to gather the nation
for a time of prayer and fasting
• The nation was led into deliverance
and restoration (1st
Sam. 12:23)
09/26/13
15. 15
DANIEL THE VICE PRESIDENT
• Daniel 1: a three year fast!!
• Kings and leaders dethroned through
his intercession
• Daniel 6: had a disciplined prayer life
• Daniel 9: 1-19
• Had the ministry of 2 archangels and
brought light into dark Babylon
• Dealing with evil forces controlling
thrones needs a good amount of
fasting.
09/26/13
16. 16
NEHEMIAH THE GOVERNOR
• Depicts an amazing ability to respond
to God’s word (Neh 1)
• We learn that intercession is
demanding and will often require
spiritual mapping for success
• We learn the importance of combining
spiritual warfare with hard work (Neh
4:16-23)
• Intercession releases an anointing for
community transformation
09/26/13
17. 17
EZRA THE PRIEST, TEACHER
• The need for fasting at a time of
leadership need (Ezra 8:21)
• We learn that intercession plays a
major role in bringing restoration,
economic recovery and social
order.
• Leaders must themselves be
involved in intercession then
others will catch the burden
09/26/13
18. 18
DAVID THE KING
• 2 Samuel 11-12: Fasted at the death
of Saul and Jonathan
• Psalm 35: 11-16 He fasted for his
enemies
• 2 Samuel 12:16-23 He fasted to have
his son delivered from death
• Psalm 69: 9-12 He was mocked for
fasting
• Psalm 109:22-25 He fasted and
became so thin that those who saw
him shook their heads
09/26/13
19. CONCLUSION
• Intercession is a reality we can’t run or shy
away from, we must not relegate it to the
backyard of church activities. We were born
into it, and so must take responsibility for it
if we must see redemption, restoration and
jubilee for our lifes, families, businesses,
cities and nation.
• God gave us the mandate to rule and have
dominion over the works of His hands – this
is done through intercession & warfare and
instituting spiritual laws to govern. If we
don’t, we remain slaves to sin, poverty,
death and satan.

20. Discussion Questions
1. What new things have you learnt about
intercession?
2. What are the legal implication of intercession?
3. Why did Abraham stop interceding?
4. Does God change His mind when intercession is
offered? – if yes, give scriptural proof.
5. Intercede for Uganda, especially that corruption
is being unraveled. Pray that righteousness,
truth and justice shall prevail in this nation as
we transition into the next 50 years - enter
jubilee. Pray that God may deliver us from the
leadership of vile men – (Ps.12:8)
