The Circle Consequences
Consequences of the Social Network Age
By: Kelsey Kjeldsen
Summary: The Circle
"The Circle" is a novel that toes the line of the effects of too much technology and the possible great
innovations that can come from it. Dave Eggers chooses to expose the possible negative effects of
these innovations through the character Mae, who is a new college graduate that receives what she
believes is a great job offer at a super tech company; The Circle. The Circle can be thought of as a
combination of present day Apple, Google, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Basically, The Circle
is a super corporation that is teetering on the side of monopolization of everything with the disguise
of "social good." Mae is drawn to The Circle by its fun campus that ... Show more content on

We have fought for politicians and our governments to be more transparent through the years, and
we have made strides to do that with the rise of technology. The government now shares majority of
its actions online so that citizens can stay informed, and this is generally a good thing. But The
Circle brings up and important issue of when is there enough transparency? When do we stop being
transparent and let people have their privacy? As companies like Apple and Google continue to
create new innovations our society will have to address these issues. In the future we should strive
to create technologies that will reduce crimes, increase honesty in governments, and allow people to
interact with each. We should not create these technologies at the cost of personal privacy or loss of
real life interactions. We do not want a future where kids do not know how to interact on a
playground or where adults cannot talk to each other meaningfully in person because they have lost
social skills. We also do not want to lose our personal privacy, so that people feel embarrassed about
their actions, and by making life more transparent we are also making it less enjoyable by being self

When I Was Miss Dow Essay
Imagine a world where one could not hide anything. Imagine a world where every aspect of life was
visible at all times. Imagine a world where every flaw and imperfection could be seen from every
angle. Imagine a world that looked down on individuality. Hard to imagine a world like this?
Unfortunately, this world already exists and everyone already lives in it. The world is transparent
and no matter what, every aspect of life can be seen and assessed. The world that Miss Dow resides
in the story When I Was Miss Dow by Sonya Dorman Hess resembles the transparent world where
nothing can be hidden or kept secret from the rest of society. When one lives transparently they are
judged and fearful of all wrong actions they take. Transparency ... Show more content on

These groups define society and leave individuals blind to their personal identity and the
characteristics that make them unique. Individuality remains covered up because it threatens the
groups and social normality's that make people feel comfortable and safe. Miss Dow lives as an
alien that transformed into a female human, in order to assimilate and learn about the humans and
their way of life. She is created with two brain lobes, allowing her to feel emotions and feelings, just
like a natural human. Miss Dow's obligation as a "human" was to fit in with society, which she was
successful in achieving. "They come first as explorers, and perhaps realize we are a race of one sex
only, rather amorphous beings of proteide; and we, even baby I, are Protean also, being able to take
various shapes at will" (Hess 151). The purpose of producing Miss Dow and assigning her to
assimilate with society was not only to get information, but also to portray the human culture and
the significance placed on fitting in with others and being a part of a defining group. This shows that
our society places more emphasis on fitting in rather than being an individual with a unique
personality, reflecting that the majority of people are insecure with themselves due to the social
expectations set upon them from the moment they enter the

Maura Pfefferman Reflection
Within the first series of the show, Maura Pfefferman comes out as a woman to her children, Sarah
Pfefferman and the daughter of Maura abandons her heterosexual marriage to peruse her
relationship with Tammy Cashman. In all of these instances, the characters' many flaws and self–
centered nature is heavily underscored and the characters' interaction with each other and those
around them helps to highlight the flaws that lie in every individual. Through the flaws and
struggles of characters depicted in her television show, Transparent, Jill Soloway highlights the

Despite her dad's confession of her struggles, Sarah replies by asking "Are you gonna tell me that
you're gonna dress up as a lady every day now?" (Transparent, Season 1, Episode 2). While the
subsequent loving interaction between the father–daughter duo showcases Sarah's support for her
dad's journey, Sarah's thought that transgender people simply want to dress up "like a lady"
showcases how she believes that transgender people's wishes are to cross–dress and not be actually
a different gender. The conflict between Sarah's want to support her father's journey and her lack of
understanding of the transgender community helps to reflect that in society if people are not aware
of the transgender people's journey, then it will be difficult for even those with the best of heart to
help and be supportive of transgender people's plight. Through Soloway's highlighting of the general
lack of knowledge of how to accept transgender individuals in society, she is able to advocate for
change in society to be more accepting and raise awareness for the transgender people's plight.
Sarah can be seen bravely standing up for her father's rights helps to showcase the importance of
raising awareness for the transgender community and the importance of being an ally for
transgender rights. During a shopping trip Maura's shopping trip with Sarah and Ali, the three of

Loss Of Private Life In The Circle By Dave Eggers
The "The Circle" is a novel written by an American author, Dave Eggers. The novel revolves around
a social construction and deconstruction of private life and the effects they have on the lives of
individuals and corporate firms. Eggers unfold a story of a young lady, Mae, at a top technology
firm, which is headed by three giants he describes as "Three Wise Men". The technology firm,
which he calls The Circle, is in the business of making life transparent through its sophisticated
technological innovations. It's a fascinating story, suggestively telling how internet technology has
led to loss of private information to corporate firms and internet giants. The three wise men,
possibly alluded to by Eggers are Twitter, Facebook and Google. Through ... Show more content on

The court of the public is the most unjust court, court ruled by emotions and hunger for control and

bid to please the voters. Mae's great motivation for her 'entirely public' life is to please her millions
of followers and be popular, get highest ratings and move closest to The Circle's inner circle. She is
a public robot, her expectations vested in the public reward. No one really cares about Mae, what
remains with her outside The Circle is her family and her father's multiple sclerosis. After her
father's distrust on the SeeChange, she is distressed about the public knowing about the distrust and
about her ex, Mercer. That's all the public can offer at times, distrust. The public always has no

The Circle: A Panopticon
The Circle is a Panopticon
According to Dalai Lama, a lack of transparency results in distrust and a deep sense of insecurity.
The novel The Circle by Dave Eggers displays an example of full transparency with the company
the Circle. A panopticon is full transparency without the other person knowing. The company,
Circle, is a panopticon because the Circle is a transparent company, the Circlers work are taking
over their lives like a prisoner, and the Circle uses oppressive behavior towards the Circlers.
The Circle is the most innovative company that inspires the workers believe in transparency. Alike

Mae, a Circler, is like a prisoner being oppressed by the Circle without her knowing. The
panopticon is a building made for prisoners and how the Circle exercises their authority or power in
an unjust manner towards the Circlers. "Bentham didn't want the panopticon to be a tool for
oppression, and in fact its failure eventually led him to develop a type of anti–panopticon later in
life – where a minister sits in an exposed room and is surrounded by members of the public who
listen and ask questions," stated Thomas (What does the panopticon mean). Following the Circle's
story, what Thomas stated in his article is very similar to the book The Circle. The Circle was
created for good morals but became corrupt and later on need to possibility shut it down due to
usage of oppressive behaviors. The Circle's panopticon operating style is shown as Mae being
oppressed by Denise and Josiah to actively using the Circle's social media. This is alike the
panopticon prisoners where they know they are being watched so they are conditioned to be on their
very best behavior. "The sometimes' is interesting to me. Or concerning, I should say. Because I
think you're not finding that 'sometime' frequently enough," stated Josiah (Eggers, 190). As Mae's
superior, Josiah is interrogating her to shape her into what the Circle wants her to be which is
oppressive behavior. From the outside, the panopticon and the Circle may seem very useful but no

How Does Dave Eggers Create A Dystopian Society
Utopias tend to capture an idealistic view of a society. Complete perfection is impossible; it creates
a system that is inherently imperfect causing utopias to turn into dystopias. The advancement of
technology has created a dystopian ideal of society in which the agency of privacy is challenged.
Dave Eggers' novel The Circle depicts a society where individuals have capitalized on the idea of a
technologically controlled world. Mae, the protagonist in the novel slowly becomes an icon of the
"digital age." Eggers asserts of the dangers of living in a technological utopian society through the
use of character development. In The Circle, Dave Eggers uses Mae's gradual conversion in order to
describe her as the paragon of a transparent society. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Mae's eventual desire to make everything transparent is one of Eggers underlying messages. After
her Kayaking trip, Mae engages in a conversation with Bailey who asks her if she wants to share
with the public what she was doing earlier. She replies by saying, "You give them anything you can.
If you care about their plight, their suffering, their curiosity, their right to learn and know anything
the world contains, you share with them. You share what you have and what you see and what you
know. To me, the logic there is undeniable." Egger uses Mae's drastic change into a less private
person as the central point in his assertion. Mae's character development explains the changes in a
society that is becoming transparent. She was more vigilant with what she made public. Soon, she
begins to feed off the Circle's ideas of transparency eventually joining SeeChange. Seechange is a
form of program that utilizes small cameras that are worn mostly by politicians and ultimately by
Mae. The camera's purpose is to go transparent; to show the public everything. Society will
eventually become like Mae. Society will be so consumed with the digital age to the point of
forgetting common human

Reflection On Anthem By Ayn Rand
While reading this book I was deeply concerned with the totalitarian government they had in place.
It reminded me a lot of the book Anthem by Ayn Rand where they also lived in a very oppressive
government but to the point that they were not allowed to say the word I and they were all given
their job in society. Throughout the whole novel, I questioned how Mae was okay with working for
The Circle. I would never be okay with wearing anything that made me fully transparent to anyone
and let them see what I was doing at all times. I would not really care if there were SeeChange
cameras up around Auburn because I think they could maybe make campus even safer. We already

Why Privacy Matters So If You Have Nothing?
In support of privacy, Daniel J. Solove wrote, Why Privacy Matters Even If You Have 'Nothing to
Hide.' Solove begins his argument by introducing the nothing–to–hide argument. In general, the
argument for surveillance is 'if you've got nothing to hide, you've got nothing to fear:' hence people's
support for government efforts and regulations to 'protect' citizens by decreasing privacy. Those who
object this argument target its most extreme cases. For example, if you have nothing to hide, could I
take a nude picture of you, own all entitlements to the photo, and share it with anyone? Absolutely
not, most would say, but this objection is not exceptionally compelling according to Solove. In order
to understand privacy, we must not reduce it to one single definition. Privacy is extremely complex
and involves a range of different things that share common characteristics. For instance, one's
privacy can be invaded by the expose of your innermost secrets, but it may also be invaded if a
peeping Tom (without the reveal of any secrets) is observing you. Your privacy may also be invaded
if the government seeks extensive information about you. All of these examples cause harm related
to an invasion of privacy, thus making the definition of privacy not applicable for a "one size fits
all" conclusion. The underlying and most significant harm that comes from surveillance is the
problem of information processing. Solove uses The Trial example to demonstrate this effect. Here,

Grant Rivard Ms. Krafcik English Honors II 29 November 2016 Emerson's Transparent Eyeball
Ralph Waldo Emerson uses the metaphor of a transparent eyeball to illustratethat humanity can
obtain insight about themselves by focusing on the innocence and purity of nature, which is
synonymous with their own spirit. Those who stop to appreciate nature have a better understanding
of themselves. Nature is not concerned with money, status, deadlines, or any of the other millions of
things that the publicpreoccupiesthemselves with in theirdaily lives. Nature is about the spirit, not
materialism. When people lose touch with nature because they are so distracted by schedules, work

Busy adults should enjoy nature with the abandon that a child would. Like an innocent child, he
points out that "nature never wears a mean appearance" (241). When Emersonexplains, "The sun
illuminates only the eye of the man, but shines into the eye and heart of the child" (241), he givesthe
reader insight as to how they are alike. Children are not in a rush, and neither is nature. People need
to remember their inner child and stop trying to hurry and accomplish and worry about everything
all the time. They should stop and really pay attention. Emerson makes the point that if people will
look at nature through the eyes of a child once again, and really see it as if they are looking through
a "transparent eyeball," then they will get back in touch with their own thoughts and feelings.
Children are not caught up in society's politics, rules, and social problems the way adults are.
Instead they are focused on the joys of nature such as picking flowers and climbing trees. Everyone
should try to look at the world in a more child–like way in order to remind themselves of its beauty
and what really matters.Nature helps preserve a sense of youthful

Feeling Like A Role Model
Feeling like a role model was an amazing sensation. Working as a customer experience
representative was emotionally validating in itself. Yet when combined with an audience, the work
became doubly fulfilling. In some ways, it boosted her self esteem and drove her to become the best
version of herself. She noticed that when her daily life was made transparent, her words and actions
became happier, more altruistic, and more intellectually interesting. She had been told that this
would be a positive effect of going transparent, but she had not anticipated other changes. She had
not anticipated that being transparent would actually redirect some of her less than perfect habits.
The camera's influence caused her to think more carefully about the way she presented herself.
When she thought of her viewers seeing her choices, she felt pressured to make healthy choices.
Thus, she abstained from sugary foods, and consumed socially acceptable levels of alcohol. When
she thought of the camera catching her consuming aspirin, she was ashamed of the image that this
might project and rerouted her behavior. Thus, she entered a life where she abstained from the parts
of her life that she found imperfect. Being watched was a way to curb bad behavior. Mae found this
freeing, and she was revered as a role model for this projected perfection. This in turn gave Mae the
responsibility of bringing light to the lives of her viewers. This was a duty that kept her going day to
day.

The Negative Effects Of Technology In Dave Eggers's The...
Imagine a world where everyone's enigmatic thoughts were exposed to the public. Today, in the vast
cyberspace, anonymity leads to audacious actions of cruel words posted by rather introverted
individuals who would not dare to speak those words in a face–to–face encounter. Furthermore, they
refuse to be held accountable for their actions and interfere with peace by creating chaos. The
phrases "secrets are lies", "sharing is caring" and "privacy is theft" (CITE?) are explicated in Dave
Eggers, The Circle. Mae Holland follows these three mantras, justified by leaders of the Circle, to
make life–changing decisions. A world extracted of anonymity and instead, policed by an
omniscient public is one cause to the negative effects of technology on one's private life. In The
Circle, programs are developed in the Circle to implicate improved and advanced living conditions
through the use of technology. Ironically, these programs such as "Past Perfect", "ChildTrack",
"SoulSearch" and "SeeChange" introduce immoral issues. The plot of The Circle by Dave Eggers
portrays the negative aspects of technology on private lives shown through character experiences in
the novel and raises unethical issues about the programs created in the Circle, which correspond to
the influence technology has in the real world. Mae Holland started her job at the Circle, known to
be the most powerful company in the world. It combines someone's entire online footprint into a

Emerson: The Importance Of Understanding Different...
Moreover, there is an importance to understanding the different perspectives and how they are to our
advantage. For instance, our wide–ranging different perspectives can in fact build us and make for a
better community. When different perspectives come from different "lenses" or "transparent
eyeballs" by a humans personal experiences, then many different perspective exist and allow for
learning and understanding of the world. When a human has a better understanding of the world
"not only enhances all of as human beings, but can also be harnessed for the better good, leading to
improved health and quality of life" (Keim). Relating back to the "transparent eye–ball" (1836),
Emerson emphasizes that looking and understanding nature in different perspectives, ... Show more

In fact, Emerson is thought to be "anti–urban" and incidentally, we will briefly note, according to
Coleman, "he writes that the way in which language is corrupted by secondary desires suggests why
country–life is better for powerful minds than that of the city" (2000). In other words, living in the
country guarantees a direct relationship with nature than that of the city–life. Coleman also states
that Emerson believes "urban life is detrimental to human beings both physically and spiritually;
and conversely nature is a source of well–being" (2000). Emerson is right that natural environments
create a significant soothing feedback than that of urban environments, but nature is not just rural.
Nature is around urban environments as well and as Cronon argues, "people should stop putting up
border between themselves and nature" (Vining) and start seeing nature in the urban environments
and thinking of themselves as nature too. "Thus, if an individual desires a sense of connectedness
with nature, he or she may have a more connected view of nature with humans than would an
individual desiring isolation"

Dave Eggers uses Mae's gradual conversion to transparency to illustrate the notion that transparency
is inevitable. A society that is succumbing to transparency greatly limits the amount of "humans

everything needs to be shared. There are things that every individual is entitled to keep to him or

Mae, who succumbs to technology, illustrates this idea. Moreover, Eggers concludes the novel with
Mae completing the Circle. Eggers claim that transparency is inevitable is truly justified by Mae's
acceptance of transparency itself; proving that even the strongest most technologically free people
can succumb to the power of transparency. Mae's disassociation with emotions and everyone close
to her also proves Eggers assertion that the digital age will not result in many positive outcomes, on
the contrary society will become dependent on technology. This dependency also creates a bridge
with other problems such as willingness, totality, and assurance of transparency. More or less
transparency has no boundaries between what is acceptable and what is correct to share. While
transparency can seem appealing in today's digital age, it comes with baggage. There is a price to
pay for ultimate transparency where knowing everything can result in an emotionless, identical, and

Comparing The Soul Selects Her Own Society 'And The Dresser'
In the poems "The Soul Selects Her Own Society," by Emily Dickinson, and "The Dresser," by Walt
Whitman, one can see two drastically different ways of how the speaker is represented in poetry.
While Whitman's poem focuses on his volunteer work in the American Civil War, Dickinson's piece
is a much more simple and vague poem about choosing one's friends. Although both of these poems
focus on a person interacting with complete strangers, Whitman's speaker is transparent and central
to the poem, while Dickinson's speaker is essentially unknown to the reader and somewhat
inconsequential. In "The Dresser," the speaker is the main focus of the poem, which results in the
speaker being transparent to the reader. In the poem, the speaker appears multiple times in each
stanza, and its title refers to the speaker. The poem even starts by introducing the speaker: "An old

Dickinson's poem talks about how people don't choose their friends knowingly, but rather their souls
choose their friends unconsciously, not being influenced by material desires. Whereas the speaker in
"The Dresser" is found multiple times in each stanza, the speaker in Dickinson's poem is only
included once: "I've known her – from an ample nation – Choose One" (The Soul Selects Her Own
Society, Emily Dickinson). In representing the speaker in her poetry, Dickinson offers no
introduction to the speaker whatsoever; the speaker is a nameless character, completely unknown to
the reader. Additionally, the line in which the speaker appears barely contributes to the poem's
meaning, only adding a simple observation about the subject of the poem. Dickinson's way of
representing the speaker in this way is completely opposite to Whitman's method, whose speaker is
transparent to the reader and essential to the

The 1920s, an era commonly known as the "Roaring Twenties" was a time period filled with various

Huck does not plan to convert the same way as them. Huck is not being what they considered

in the piece is when Huck illustrates that ¨There was things which he stretched, but mainly he told

Watson portrays herself as religious, but has an adopted son who she lives with that is not like

like they are claiming and wanting Huck to be. To conclude, Huck is more comfortable having his

Code Of Justice By Stephen Glass Summary
Stephen Glass has a degree in law from Georgetown University Law Center but he may never

both states have denied him admission to the Bar. Glass removed his application to become licensed
in New York and the California Supreme Court decided he lacked "the good moral character" to be a
lawyer. Lacking morality in any profession is unacceptable because it proves one cannot make
proper ethical decisions. Glass was a great writer with a very vivid imagination, but he was not a

Water In Emerson's Essay
An essay discussing the use of water throughout Emerson's "Nature." The essay analyzes the use of
water to symbolize a man's spirit, a life force, the connection of man and nature, and the sheer
power that nature holds. The use of water metaphorically and literally is explained in depth and
viewed through many different lenses. Many metaphors and multiple uses of imagery are created
through the idea of water. I will use this source to connect and bring more figurative language pieces
about water into my essay. The essay also explains Emerson's background and why water is used so
frequently throughout Emerson's essay. Knowing this background information will be helpful in
explaining the metaphors. A blog post depicting how Emerson used metaphors of nature and of
himself to show how nature should be viewed. The post provided a further argument that Emerson
believes that Nature should be viewed as innocent and pure and not as a way for temporary gain.
The post also explains the metaphor pertaining to a snake shedding his skin, and the allusion to
youthfulness. I will use this post to explain Emerson's views on youthfulness, and bring a different
perspective to the meaning behind the "transparent eyeball." The post also explains some of the
reasons for Emerson to be study nature in such a close manner, which I will use to explain ... Show

Pushing Social Change And Toppling The Patriarchy Essay
Pushing Social Change and Toppling the Patriarchy
Television remains an important medium in exposing the viewing public to marginalized ideas, life
styles, and varied ways of thinking. Unlike a film, which usually takes place over a self–contained
two–hour period, television offers more screen time over the arch of seasons to explore characters
and themes in deeply meaningful and personal ways. Aided by its structure and format, television
programs are able to touch people, helping to change how we all view the world. In recent years,
and amongst the explosion in popularity of platforms such as Hulu, Amazon, and Netflix, willing to
take risks on shows and themes previously perceived as too risqué for television, programs have

Jill Soloway, comedian, writer and director, and pioneering television icon, created Transparent to
make the world a safer place for transgenders and other minorities. As Jill Soloway said at the 2016
Primetime Emmy Awards, she wants to "topple the patriarchy" and make transgenders and members
of the LGBTQ community heroes (Huffington Post, 2016). Therefore, through examining the
themes of gender identity and religion, both themes presented in the film and in class, Transparent
comments on society's current state and proposes meaningful change.
As Transparent begins, the opening credits offer a glimpse into the ideas of gender. From the
lighting of a candle, symbolizing light into the darkness of life, to a shimmering blue dress–worn by
a female impersonator–the opening credits reveal the process of becoming a transgender.
Transitioning from a male to a female, or vice–versa, is a feat that only a few undertake. However,
in the show Transparent, Mort Pfefferman transitions into Maura Pfefferman, a masculine figure
who blossoms in femininity and bravery. While it is already a difficult task to come out as
transgender, it is made even more difficult in this case because Maura has to deal with many family
dramas revolving around her self–absorbed children.
Throughout the first season of Transparent, gender identity is explored and seen through the
challenges that the characters face. For

Summary: Does A Transparent Society Lead To Liberty
Does a Transparent Society Lead To Liberty
American culture is built on the right to privacy. As the Constitution explicitly states Americans
have, "the right... to make personal decisions regarding intimate matters; ...the right... to lead their
lives in a manner that is reasonably secluded from public scrutiny, whether such scrutiny comes
from a neighbor's ...eyes, an investigator's eavesdropping ..., or a news photographer's ... camera;
and... the right... to be free from unwarranted drug testing and electronic surveillance" (Privacy).
Privacy is an inherent need of human beings because people need a safe space where they are not
obligated to censor themselves in order to make people in society feel comfortable. Privacy creates a

their consumers' emails (Pender 2010). This trend is also popular among the workplace as some
companies are starting to watch their employees email and web browsing habits, and through

Pad 622 Unit 2 Research Paper

PAD 622 – Science, Technology and Government
The conception of transparency seems to be everywhere in todays time, from the products we
consume as buying customers to the governments we look to in leading our nations. Social media is
another refuge for transparency. With millions of people noticing, it's difficult for any organization
or individual to say one thing and do another. Supporters of the transparency movement say that it is
a very good thing; after all, transparency is serving to keep people honest and up front about the
products and services they sell to consumers.
Many may ask the question, why is transparency so important to people. Maybe its because some
people place such a high value on transparency because it can help to cause change on different
levels. Changes can occur within a corporation or government, which can change the way it the
government functions. Transparency can also create a change in the way government and companies
relate to the public. And, it can result in groups being able to participate in lawmaking that may not
have had that opportunity beforehand. It could be that people are witnessing a new world
transformation. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Why Is Civil Disobedience Important
The law is meant to preserve order, safety, and other aspects of society, and generally should not be
disobeyed. However, civil disobedience is crucial to society. Civil disobedience improves society
and keeps society and government accountable to their respective duties.
Civil disobedience is a necessary civic duty, necessary to rein in government and society and keep
them accountable to their respective duties. An example of this is the release of the Pentagon Papers
by Daniel Ellsberg. The American government was being secretive about its actions in the Vietnam
War, and a democratic government should not be secretive about its actions. The U.S. is a
representative democracy who prides itself on the principles of democracy and individual freedom.
It has an entire branch of government––Congress––who is directly elected by the people, ... Show

It is the government's duty to be transparent to its citizens, so that its citizens are informed about the
actions of the government, allowing for American citizens to make informed decisions about the
government and keep the government accountable to itself. However, during the Vietnam war, the
government was not performing its duty of being transparent to its citizens. It was not fulfilling its
duty as a democratic government. Therefore, action must be taken to rectify this, and make the
American government to be responsible to its citizens again. Civil disobedience can rectify
problems and keep society and the government accountable to their duties, making civil
disobedience a necessary civic duty. Thus, when Daniel Ellsberg was smuggling copies of
confidential documents out of the Pentagon to unveil to the public what would be the Pentagon
Papers, he was performing his civic duty. He was making the government transparent and, as a
result, responsible to its people. Thus, his act of civil disobedience––illegally smuggling
confidential government documents and publishing them––helped to make the government be more

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Solar Panels
Solar panels have become increasingly popular and increasingly common, but there is a huge
disadvantage to using them; they require a lot of space. To power the average US home one would
need 600 square feet of space – about 55 square meters – which costs $55,000 – almost €70,000 –
(Statistic Brain). Now researchers at the Michigan State University believe that they have found a
solution to make solar panels more space efficient. A team of researchers at the Michigan State
University has developed solar panels that are transparent. The advantage of this is "that [they] can
be placed directly over a window to harvest the sun's energy" (Mail Online) and still be transparent.
Usually the solar cells are blue, but the researchers managed to use "transparent luminescent solar
concentrators (TLSC)" (Extreme Tech) to make the cells transparent. TLSC is made of organic salts,
which absorb "specific non–visible wavelengths of ultraviolet and infrared light" (Extreme Tech).
The cell converts these wavelengths into a different infrared light through a glow. The glow is then
guided to the edge of the cell which uses "thin strips of photovoltaic solar cells" (Mail Online) to
convert the light energy into electricity, just like the 'normal' solar panels. The cells appear to be
transparent because "[They] do not absorb or emit light in the visible spectrum" (Mail Online). ...

According to Extreme Tech the TLSC "currently has an efficiency of around 1%"(Extreme Tech),
but scientists estimate that at least 5% efficiency should be possible. Hailtek GmbH recently
managed to achieve "transparency levels of 40% with an efficiency level of over 7%" (Hailtek),
which proves the researcher's estimate. To make the cells cost effective though, one could buy
enough to cover a whole building or wall. Despite the lack of efficiency in the cell, there are several
advantages to having a fully transparent solar

Essay about Ralph Waldo Emerson's Nature
"In the woods, we return to reason and faith. There I feel that nothing can befall me in life, – no
disgrace, no calamity (leaving me my eyes), which nature cannot repair. Standing on the bare
ground, – my head bathed by the blithe air and uplifted into infinite space, – all mean egotism
vanishes. I become a transparent eyeball. I am nothing. I see all. The currents of the Universal Being
circulate through me; I am part or particle of God."
–Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nature (1836)

Early on, he describes himself as a "transparent eyeball." In this passage, he expresses his view that
nature is purity. Emerson believes being in pure nature ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Man appreciates the beauty and pays homage to the one who created it. Emerson then says "There I
feel that nothing can befall me in life, – no disgrace, no calamity (leaving me my eyes), which
nature cannot repair." He seems to feel at one with nature. Emerson sees the serenity and peace and
realizes how insignificant all of his life's problems are. He believes that there is no problem nature is
incapable of remedying. As the saying goes, "Time heals all wounds." Emerson's words seem to
echo that. He seems almost completely careless about all his former petty concerns. His next
remark, "Standing on the bare ground, – my head bathed by the blithe air and uplifted into infinite
space, – all mean egotism vanishes." He feels free of the bars society has constructed, he is free of
all concerns and worries. the "infinite space" he describes indicates a place with no restrictions,
where he can be as he ought to, to see the glory and majesty of nature. Emerson also notes that
selfishness dissolves as the figurative big picture is made visible. Again, being in this situation
enables a man to realize his insignificance as a single being. "I become a transparent eyeball. I am
nothing. I see all." This metaphor embodies the basis of Emerson's entire philosophy. In this
sentence, he fully indicates his unique outlook – this "transparent eyeball" – means that he is

Great Art Will Be A Transparent Reflection Of Society
Great art will always be a transparent reflection of the society in which it was produced. The
greatest artists are able to blend cultures and practices into a single work, creating an aesthetic
dialogue that challenges viewers to look at the piece with multiple perspectives and creates the
opportunity for continuous discovery upon subsequent visits. On the first floor of the new Broad
Museum, in Downtown Los Angeles, there is a piece of art executed by the prolific Japanese artist,
Takashi Murakami, which does just this. In a room that is solely dedicated to the work of Murakami,
there is a piece that seems to stand out more than the rest.

Through the use of his famous 'superflat technique', Murakami removes all texture and physical
depth from the painting– creating a body of work that feels seamlessly absent of human
involvement. There is no physical trace of texture or brush stroke, the paint has the appearance of
being printed onto the canvas. Additionally, through this technique, Murakami is able to compress
characteristics of digital design, high and low arts, pop culture, and historical culture all into one
piece. As one begins to analyze what is taking place on the canvas, this becomes more evident.
As one walks around the first–floor gallery and gazes at this work by Murakami which spans two
walls – wrapping from one wall, through the corner, to the next wall – one will see images of anime,
skulls, fish, boats, geishas and more. The entire stretch of the nearly eighty–two–foot long canvas
seems to be awash in the enormous waves of a tsunami. These waves and the rest of the characters
on the canvas are composed of a selection of radiant acrylics, which fill the rendered pictures on the
canvas with a psychedelic palette of colors. Within each wave, various historical references can
found. Most notably, a color pattern alluding to Katsushika Kokusai's famous painting, The Great
Wave off Kanagawa, is used to fill in several strips of waves that

The Prince And Niccolo Machiavelli
The makeup of a functioning society is one that lies in the grey area of human existence. Not every
aspect of human nature is ready to be sorted into one or the other. Which is why when examining
society, it is important to have both a realistic as well as an idealistic view. Philosophers Niccolò
Machiavelli and Socrates lived in a time of uncertainty, political fragmentation, and violence and
their attitude on how to deal with such issues were contrasting. Machiavelli chooses to focus on
creating a political power that is long lasting while Socrates chooses to investigate more into the
unknown and promote transparency by challenging the authority that is already in power. As
indicated by the works The Apology and Crito, Socrates has an idealistic approach towards ethics
and politics. On the opposite hand, in the work The Prince, philosopher Niccolò Machiavelli
advocates a realistic point of view in creating a political power that is strong and long–lasting.
Socrates would not be supportive of Machiavelli's The Prince as it advocates for everything that
Socrates identifies as unstable characteristics for a government. In short, the political system of
which Machiavelli is advocating for is the sole one that Socrates is trying to dismantle.

Censorship And Its Effect On Society
nformation is one of the most fundamental means by which people can acquire power and influence
in Western society. It is also said that information is practically the most powerful and important
weapon against corruption in the world. Those who have access to sensitive information, by
whatever means either through corruption or unrestricted access, can use this information to demand
bribes and even obtain more information by corruption or hide it from others. Owning that access
and practicing the act of corruption and maladministration will increase transparency and will also
enable society and even media to know and use the right information as the truth will be covered.
The right to know the information and to fully understand society's rights is a great value that is not
always realised by society, but given the example of the government, the ones who own more
information have the power to hide their own actions and to control the information censoring
media. As far as the government is concerned privacy, political and economic information is not to
be shared, therefore they can deny access to it. This type of information is controlled making society
unaware of what is happening. Fortunately, it is a two–way role. There are laws to prevent this from
happening and also to give access to the right and non sensitive information. Information free from
corruption is vital for society to know what is happening.

Chipotle Company Case Study
Yes, transparency is important in all companies. Transparency is easier for some than others.
Transparency operates in such a way that it is easy for other people to see what action is taken. It
has been defined as "the quality that is seen as intentionally shared information of the sender."
Transparency is practiced in companies, organizations, administration, and society. It guides the

Criminal Law Vs. Private Law
Criminal Law vs. Private Law
The Rule of Law, as expressed through Canadian criminal law is important as our laws embody the
basic moral values of society. The primary aims of criminal law are to protect the public and
preserve peace (Barnhorst & Barnhorst, 2013). Law also imposes limits on our actions and guides
our choices in conduct. The conditions of the Rule of Law ensure that no individual, government or
parliament is treated as above the law, and that everyone must obey the law or they must suffer the
consequences. The primary reason that criminal law is necessary, rather than governing individual
behaviour through private law, is because committing a criminal offence is seen as committing a
crime against society as a whole rather than an individual. The protection and punishment of the
offender should be proportionate to the offence committed and all Canadian courts should attempt to
administer punishment to offenders using a Canada wide set of laws which are based on similar
cases that occurred in the past, rather than private laws in order to avoid bias in different
jurisdictions and areas of Canada. "Citizens of countries that do not adhere to recognize the rule of
law are often unable to stand up against the government or other powerful interests without fear or
attack and there are often reports of human rights violations" (The Law Society of British Columbia,
2013). A country that is not governed by the rule of law would result in laws and court proceedings

The Circle Consequences

  • 1. The Circle Consequences Consequences of the Social Network Age By: Kelsey Kjeldsen Summary: The Circle "The Circle" is a novel that toes the line of the effects of too much technology and the possible great innovations that can come from it. Dave Eggers chooses to expose the possible negative effects of these innovations through the character Mae, who is a new college graduate that receives what she believes is a great job offer at a super tech company; The Circle. The Circle can be thought of as a combination of present day Apple, Google, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Basically, The Circle is a super corporation that is teetering on the side of monopolization of everything with the disguise of "social good." Mae is drawn to The Circle by its fun campus that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We have fought for politicians and our governments to be more transparent through the years, and we have made strides to do that with the rise of technology. The government now shares majority of its actions online so that citizens can stay informed, and this is generally a good thing. But The Circle brings up and important issue of when is there enough transparency? When do we stop being transparent and let people have their privacy? As companies like Apple and Google continue to create new innovations our society will have to address these issues. In the future we should strive to create technologies that will reduce crimes, increase honesty in governments, and allow people to interact with each. We should not create these technologies at the cost of personal privacy or loss of real life interactions. We do not want a future where kids do not know how to interact on a playground or where adults cannot talk to each other meaningfully in person because they have lost social skills. We also do not want to lose our personal privacy, so that people feel embarrassed about their actions, and by making life more transparent we are also making it less enjoyable by being self ... • 2. When I Was Miss Dow Essay Imagine a world where one could not hide anything. Imagine a world where every aspect of life was visible at all times. Imagine a world where every flaw and imperfection could be seen from every angle. Imagine a world that looked down on individuality. Hard to imagine a world like this? Unfortunately, this world already exists and everyone already lives in it. The world is transparent and no matter what, every aspect of life can be seen and assessed. The world that Miss Dow resides in the story When I Was Miss Dow by Sonya Dorman Hess resembles the transparent world where nothing can be hidden or kept secret from the rest of society. When one lives transparently they are judged and fearful of all wrong actions they take. Transparency ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These groups define society and leave individuals blind to their personal identity and the characteristics that make them unique. Individuality remains covered up because it threatens the groups and social normality's that make people feel comfortable and safe. Miss Dow lives as an alien that transformed into a female human, in order to assimilate and learn about the humans and their way of life. She is created with two brain lobes, allowing her to feel emotions and feelings, just like a natural human. Miss Dow's obligation as a "human" was to fit in with society, which she was successful in achieving. "They come first as explorers, and perhaps realize we are a race of one sex only, rather amorphous beings of proteide; and we, even baby I, are Protean also, being able to take various shapes at will" (Hess 151). The purpose of producing Miss Dow and assigning her to assimilate with society was not only to get information, but also to portray the human culture and the significance placed on fitting in with others and being a part of a defining group. This shows that our society places more emphasis on fitting in rather than being an individual with a unique personality, reflecting that the majority of people are insecure with themselves due to the social expectations set upon them from the moment they enter the ... Maura Pfefferman Reflection Within the first series of the show, Maura Pfefferman comes out as a woman to her children, Sarah Pfefferman and the daughter of Maura abandons her heterosexual marriage to peruse her relationship with Tammy Cashman. In all of these instances, the characters' many flaws and self– centered nature is heavily underscored and the characters' interaction with each other and those around them helps to highlight the flaws that lie in every individual. Through the flaws and struggles of characters depicted in her television show, Transparent, Jill Soloway highlights the plight of the queer individuals in society. This blunt reflection raises awareness of the self–centered nature of humans and the hatred, insensitivity, and bigotry that these ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Despite her dad's confession of her struggles, Sarah replies by asking "Are you gonna tell me that you're gonna dress up as a lady every day now?" (Transparent, Season 1, Episode 2). While the subsequent loving interaction between the father–daughter duo showcases Sarah's support for her dad's journey, Sarah's thought that transgender people simply want to dress up "like a lady" showcases how she believes that transgender people's wishes are to cross–dress and not be actually a different gender. The conflict between Sarah's want to support her father's journey and her lack of understanding of the transgender community helps to reflect that in society if people are not aware of the transgender people's journey, then it will be difficult for even those with the best of heart to help and be supportive of transgender people's plight. Through Soloway's highlighting of the general lack of knowledge of how to accept transgender individuals in society, she is able to advocate for change in society to be more accepting and raise awareness for the transgender people's plight. Sarah can be seen bravely standing up for her father's rights helps to showcase the importance of raising awareness for the transgender community and the importance of being an ally for transgender rights. • 4. Loss Of Private Life In The Circle By Dave Eggers The "The Circle" is a novel written by an American author, Dave Eggers. The novel revolves around a social construction and deconstruction of private life and the effects they have on the lives of individuals and corporate firms. Eggers unfold a story of a young lady, Mae, at a top technology firm, which is headed by three giants he describes as "Three Wise Men". The technology firm, which he calls The Circle, is in the business of making life transparent through its sophisticated technological innovations. It's a fascinating story, suggestively telling how internet technology has led to loss of private information to corporate firms and internet giants. The three wise men, possibly alluded to by Eggers are Twitter, Facebook and Google. Through ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The court of the public is the most unjust court, court ruled by emotions and hunger for control and revenge. As in the case of a politician who when it nears elections acts in a predictable manner in a bid to please the voters. Mae's great motivation for her 'entirely public' life is to please her millions of followers and be popular, get highest ratings and move closest to The Circle's inner circle. She is a public robot, her expectations vested in the public reward. No one really cares about Mae, what remains with her outside The Circle is her family and her father's multiple sclerosis. After her father's distrust on the SeeChange, she is distressed about the public knowing about the distrust and about her ex, Mercer. That's all the public can offer at times, distrust. The public always has no better reward, the worth of sacrificing private life. Instead, sharing will make you more depressed and drive you to the solitary ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Circle: A Panopticon The Circle is a Panopticon According to Dalai Lama, a lack of transparency results in distrust and a deep sense of insecurity. The novel The Circle by Dave Eggers displays an example of full transparency with the company the Circle. A panopticon is full transparency without the other person knowing. The company, Circle, is a panopticon because the Circle is a transparent company, the Circlers work are taking over their lives like a prisoner, and the Circle uses oppressive behavior towards the Circlers. Mae, a Circler, is like a prisoner being oppressed by the Circle without her knowing. The panopticon is a building made for prisoners and how the Circle exercises their authority or power in an unjust manner towards the Circlers. "Bentham didn't want the panopticon to be a tool for oppression, and in fact its failure eventually led him to develop a type of anti–panopticon later in life – where a minister sits in an exposed room and is surrounded by members of the public who listen and ask questions," stated Thomas (What does the panopticon mean). Following the Circle's story, what Thomas stated in his article is very similar to the book The Circle. The Circle was created for good morals but became corrupt and later on need to possibility shut it down due to usage of oppressive behaviors. The Circle's panopticon operating style is shown as Mae being oppressed by Denise and Josiah to actively using the Circle's social media. This is alike the panopticon prisoners where they know they are being watched so they are conditioned to be on their very best behavior. "The sometimes' is interesting to me. Or concerning, I should say. Because I think you're not finding that 'sometime' frequently enough," stated Josiah (Eggers, 190). • 6. How Does Dave Eggers Create A Dystopian Society Utopias tend to capture an idealistic view of a society. Complete perfection is impossible; it creates a system that is inherently imperfect causing utopias to turn into dystopias. The advancement of technology has created a dystopian ideal of society in which the agency of privacy is challenged. Dave Eggers' novel The Circle depicts a society where individuals have capitalized on the idea of a technologically controlled world. Mae, the protagonist in the novel slowly becomes an icon of the "digital age." Eggers asserts of the dangers of living in a technological utopian society through the use of character development. In The Circle, Dave Eggers uses Mae's gradual conversion in order to describe her as the paragon of a transparent society. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Mae's eventual desire to make everything transparent is one of Eggers underlying messages. After her Kayaking trip, Mae engages in a conversation with Bailey who asks her if she wants to share with the public what she was doing earlier. She replies by saying, "You give them anything you can. If you care about their plight, their suffering, their curiosity, their right to learn and know anything the world contains, you share with them. You share what you have and what you see and what you know. To me, the logic there is undeniable." Egger uses Mae's drastic change into a less private person as the central point in his assertion. Mae's character development explains the changes in a society that is becoming transparent. She was more vigilant with what she made public. Soon, she begins to feed off the Circle's ideas of transparency eventually joining SeeChange. Seechange is a form of program that utilizes small cameras that are worn mostly by politicians and ultimately by Mae. The camera's purpose is to go transparent; to show the public everything. • 7. Reflection On Anthem By Ayn Rand While reading this book I was deeply concerned with the totalitarian government they had in place. It reminded me a lot of the book Anthem by Ayn Rand where they also lived in a very oppressive government but to the point that they were not allowed to say the word I and they were all given their job in society. Throughout the whole novel, I questioned how Mae was okay with working for The Circle. I would never be okay with wearing anything that made me fully transparent to anyone and let them see what I was doing at all times. I would not really care if there were SeeChange cameras up around Auburn because I think they could maybe make campus even safer. • 8. Why Privacy Matters So If You Have Nothing? In support of privacy, Daniel J. Solove wrote, Why Privacy Matters Even If You Have 'Nothing to Hide.' Solove begins his argument by introducing the nothing–to–hide argument. In general, the argument for surveillance is 'if you've got nothing to hide, you've got nothing to fear:' hence people's support for government efforts and regulations to 'protect' citizens by decreasing privacy. Those who object this argument target its most extreme cases. For example, if you have nothing to hide, could I take a nude picture of you, own all entitlements to the photo, and share it with anyone? Absolutely not, most would say, but this objection is not exceptionally compelling according to Solove. In order to understand privacy, we must not reduce it to one single definition. Privacy is extremely complex and involves a range of different things that share common characteristics. For instance, one's privacy can be invaded by the expose of your innermost secrets, but it may also be invaded if a peeping Tom (without the reveal of any secrets) is observing you. Your privacy may also be invaded if the government seeks extensive information about you. All of these examples cause harm related to an invasion of privacy, thus making the definition of privacy not applicable for a "one size fits all" conclusion. The underlying and most significant harm that comes from surveillance is the problem of information processing. Solove uses The Trial example to demonstrate this effect. Here, the ... Grant Rivard Ms. Krafcik English Honors II 29 November 2016 Emerson's Transparent Eyeball Ralph Waldo Emerson uses the metaphor of a transparent eyeball to illustratethat humanity can obtain insight about themselves by focusing on the innocence and purity of nature, which is synonymous with their own spirit. Those who stop to appreciate nature have a better understanding of themselves. Nature is not concerned with money, status, deadlines, or any of the other millions of things that the publicpreoccupiesthemselves with in theirdaily lives. Children are not in a rush, and neither is nature. People need to remember their inner child and stop trying to hurry and accomplish and worry about everything all the time. They should stop and really pay attention. Emerson makes the point that if people will look at nature through the eyes of a child once again, and really see it as if they are looking through a "transparent eyeball," then they will get back in touch with their own thoughts and feelings. Children are not caught up in society's politics, rules, and social problems the way adults are. Instead they are focused on the joys of nature such as picking flowers and climbing trees. Yet when combined with an audience, the work became doubly fulfilling. In some ways, it boosted her self esteem and drove her to become the best version of herself. She noticed that when her daily life was made transparent, her words and actions became happier, more altruistic, and more intellectually interesting. She had been told that this would be a positive effect of going transparent, but she had not anticipated other changes. She had not anticipated that being transparent would actually redirect some of her less than perfect habits. The camera's influence caused her to think more carefully about the way she presented herself. When she thought of her viewers seeing her choices, she felt pressured to make healthy choices. Thus, she abstained from sugary foods, and consumed socially acceptable levels of alcohol. When she thought of the camera catching her consuming aspirin, she was ashamed of the image that this might project and rerouted her behavior. Thus, she entered a life where she abstained from the parts of her life that she found imperfect. Being watched was a way to curb bad behavior. Mae found this freeing, and she was revered as a role model for this projected perfection. This in turn gave Mae the responsibility of bringing light to the lives of her viewers. This was a duty that kept her going day to day. In the chosen ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. The Negative Effects Of Technology In Dave Eggers's The... Imagine a world where everyone's enigmatic thoughts were exposed to the public. Today, in the vast cyberspace, anonymity leads to audacious actions of cruel words posted by rather introverted individuals who would not dare to speak those words in a face–to–face encounter. Furthermore, they refuse to be held accountable for their actions and interfere with peace by creating chaos. The phrases "secrets are lies", "sharing is caring" and "privacy is theft" (CITE?) are explicated in Dave Eggers, The Circle. Mae Holland follows these three mantras, justified by leaders of the Circle, to make life–changing decisions. A world extracted of anonymity and instead, policed by an omniscient public is one cause to the negative effects of technology on one's private life. In The Circle, programs are developed in the Circle to implicate improved and advanced living conditions through the use of technology. Ironically, these programs such as "Past Perfect", "ChildTrack", "SoulSearch" and "SeeChange" introduce immoral issues. The plot of The Circle by Dave Eggers portrays the negative aspects of technology on private lives shown through character experiences in the novel and raises unethical issues about the programs created in the Circle, which correspond to the influence technology has in the real world. Mae Holland started her job at the Circle, known to be the most powerful company in the world. It combines someone's entire online footprint into a single online identity. The company ... In other words, living in the country guarantees a direct relationship with nature than that of the city–life. Coleman also states that Emerson believes "urban life is detrimental to human beings both physically and spiritually; and conversely nature is a source of well–being" (2000). Emerson is right that natural environments create a significant soothing feedback than that of urban environments, but nature is not just rural. Nature is around urban environments as well and as Cronon argues, "people should stop putting up border between themselves and nature" (Vining) and start seeing nature in the urban environments and thinking of themselves as nature too. • 14. How Does Dave Eggers Create A Dystopian Society? Utopias tend to capture an idealistic view of a society. However, complete perfection is impossible, it creates a system that is inherently imperfect. Dave Eggers' novel The Circle depicts a society in which individuals have capitalized the idea of a technologically controlled world. Mae, the protagonist in the novel slowly becomes an icon of the "digital age." Eggers asserts the danger of living in a technological dystopian society through the use of character development. In The Circle, Dave Eggers uses Mae's gradual conversion to transparency to illustrate the notion that transparency is inevitable. A society that is succumbing to transparency greatly limits the amount of "humans rights" individuals have. In order for a society to be functional there is a need for privacy. Not everything needs to be shared. There are things that every individual is entitled to keep to him or herself. Eggers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Mae, who succumbs to technology, illustrates this idea. Moreover, Eggers concludes the novel with Mae completing the Circle. Eggers claim that transparency is inevitable is truly justified by Mae's acceptance of transparency itself; proving that even the strongest most technologically free people can succumb to the power of transparency. Mae's disassociation with emotions and everyone close to her also proves Eggers assertion that the digital age will not result in many positive outcomes, on the contrary society will become dependent on technology. This dependency also creates a bridge with other problems such as willingness, totality, and assurance of transparency. More or less transparency has no boundaries between what is acceptable and what is correct to share. While transparency can seem appealing in today's digital age, it comes with baggage. Comparing The Soul Selects Her Own Society 'And The Dresser' In the poems "The Soul Selects Her Own Society," by Emily Dickinson, and "The Dresser," by Walt Whitman, one can see two drastically different ways of how the speaker is represented in poetry. While Whitman's poem focuses on his volunteer work in the American Civil War, Dickinson's piece is a much more simple and vague poem about choosing one's friends. Although both of these poems focus on a person interacting with complete strangers, Whitman's speaker is transparent and central to the poem, while Dickinson's speaker is essentially unknown to the reader and somewhat inconsequential. In "The Dresser," the speaker is the main focus of the poem, which results in the speaker being transparent to the reader. Advantages And Disadvantages Of Solar Panels Solar panels have become increasingly popular and increasingly common, but there is a huge disadvantage to using them; they require a lot of space. To power the average US home one would need 600 square feet of space – about 55 square meters – which costs $55,000 – almost €70,000 – (Statistic Brain). Now researchers at the Michigan State University believe that they have found a solution to make solar panels more space efficient. A team of researchers at the Michigan State University has developed solar panels that are transparent. The advantage of this is "that [they] can be placed directly over a window to harvest the sun's energy" (Mail Online) and still be transparent. Usually the solar cells are blue, but the researchers managed to use "transparent luminescent solar concentrators (TLSC)" (Extreme Tech) to make the cells transparent. TLSC is made of organic salts, which absorb "specific non–visible wavelengths of ultraviolet and infrared light" (Extreme Tech). The cell converts these wavelengths into a different infrared light through a glow. The glow is then guided to the edge of the cell which uses "thin strips of photovoltaic solar cells" (Mail Online) to convert the light energy into electricity, just like the 'normal' solar panels. • 30. Analysis Of Transparent By Mort Pfefferman As Jill Soloway's TV show Transparent begins, the opening credits offer a glimpse into the ideas of gender. From the lighting of a candle, symbolizing light into the darkness of life, to a shimmering blue dress–that worn by a female impersonator–the opening credits reveal the process of becoming a transgender. Transitioning from a male to a female, or vice–versa, is a feat that only a few come to do. However, in the show Transparent, Mort Pfefferman transitions into Maura Pfefferman, a masculine figure who blossoms in femininity and bravery. While it is already a difficult task to come out as transgender, Maura has to deal with the drama revolving with her family. Throughout the first season of Transparent, gender identity is explored and seen through the challenges that the characters face. For instance, Maura struggles to reveal his true identity to his children. In episode 1, "Pilot," Mort calls his children and invites them to dinner. The children suspect that Maura has a terminal disease; however, Maura is planning on revealing his greatest secret: that she is transitioning. Later that evening, after Sarah and Josh leave, Ali, the child who Maura sees resemblance in the most, stays aside to talk to Maura. They have a quick conversation about their days, but before Ali leaves, Maura utters "Boy, it is so hard when someone sees something you do not want them to see" (Citation). This quote truly reveals the overarching message of the television show: we all hold secrets. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 33. The Prince And Niccolo Machiavelli The makeup of a functioning society is one that lies in the grey area of human existence. Not every aspect of human nature is ready to be sorted into one or the other. Which is why when examining society, it is important to have both a realistic as well as an idealistic view. Philosophers Niccolò Machiavelli and Socrates lived in a time of uncertainty, political fragmentation, and violence and their attitude on how to deal with such issues were contrasting. Machiavelli chooses to focus on creating a political power that is long lasting while Socrates chooses to investigate more into the unknown and promote transparency by challenging the authority that is already in power. As indicated by the works The Apology and Crito, Socrates has an idealistic approach towards ethics and politics. On the opposite hand, in the work The Prince, philosopher Niccolò Machiavelli advocates a realistic point of view in creating a political power that is strong and long–lasting. Socrates would not be supportive of Machiavelli's The Prince as it advocates for everything that Socrates identifies as unstable characteristics for a government. In short, the political system of which Machiavelli is advocating for is the sole one that Socrates is trying to dismantle. For decades it has brought families together for a few hours of shared enjoyment at the end of the day, and given co–workers something to talk about at the water cooler to distract them from the dull tasks that lay ahead of them. TV has capitalized on this ability to distract its mass of viewers from their everyday lives. • 35. Censorship And Its Effect On Society nformation is one of the most fundamental means by which people can acquire power and influence in Western society. It is also said that information is practically the most powerful and important weapon against corruption in the world. Those who have access to sensitive information, by whatever means either through corruption or unrestricted access, can use this information to demand bribes and even obtain more information by corruption or hide it from others. Owning that access and practicing the act of corruption and maladministration will increase transparency and will also enable society and even media to know and use the right information as the truth will be covered. The right to know the information and to fully understand society's rights is a great value that is not always realised by society, but given the example of the government, the ones who own more information have the power to hide their own actions and to control the information censoring media. As far as the government is concerned privacy, political and economic information is not to be shared, therefore they can deny access to it. • 37. Criminal Law Vs. Private Law Criminal Law vs. Private Law The Rule of Law, as expressed through Canadian criminal law is important as our laws embody the basic moral values of society. The primary aims of criminal law are to protect the public and preserve peace (Barnhorst & Barnhorst, 2013). Law also imposes limits on our actions and guides our choices in conduct. The conditions of the Rule of Law ensure that no individual, government or parliament is treated as above the law, and that everyone must obey the law or they must suffer the consequences. The primary reason that criminal law is necessary, rather than governing individual behaviour through private law, is because committing a criminal offence is seen as committing a crime against society as a whole rather than an individual. The protection and punishment of the offender should be proportionate to the offence committed and all Canadian courts should attempt to administer punishment to offenders using a Canada wide set of laws which are based on similar cases that occurred in the past, rather than private laws in order to avoid bias in different jurisdictions and areas of Canada. "Citizens of countries that do not adhere to recognize the rule of law are often unable to stand up against the government or other powerful interests without fear or attack and there are often reports of human rights violations" (The Law Society of British Columbia, 2013).
