On Jan. 5, 2011, Malloy Became the first
Democratic governor since William O’Neill left
office in 1991.
Malloy is the longest-serving mayor in the
history of Stamford, a city in Fairfield County that
he governed from 1995 to 2009.

Formerly worked as a prosecutor in Brooklyn,
New York. He served for four years as an assistant
district attorney , winning 22 of 23 felony convictions.
He is a graduate of Boston College and Boston
College Law School.

• Andrew McDonald represented the 27th
Senate District, which includes Stamford
and Darien, for eight years before Malloy
appointed him general counsel.
• McDonald worked for Malloy when he
was the Mayor of Stamford, serving as the
Director of Legal Affairs and Corporation
Counsel. He, like Malloy, grew up in
Stamford.
• He was elected to his fifth term as a state
representative but left his seat to join
Malloy.

Ben Barnes, the Secretary of the Office of
Policy Management, worked for Malloy
in Stamford for eight years, serving as
Director of Administration, Director of
Operations and Director of Public Safety,
Health and Welfare.
He left his position as Chief Operating
Officer of the Bridgeport School District,
a position he had held for about a year,
to join Malloy in Hartford.
Malloy broke with tradition and chose an
outsider to fill a position that, according
to the Hartford Courant, is typically held
by a party insider.
