Dear Judges:
My name is Jessica Reyes, I am seventeen years old, I am very excited to introduce my senior
project to you. At the end of my junior year I decided I wanted to do something useful with my
time as a senior. I really was interested in doing an internship. This helped tremendously with my
senior project because I used the field of Orthodontistry to explore more and also to create a
product for my senior project. I came to the conclusion that I would learn and educate myself
more on the field and also learn how to make impression, or mold of mouths for retainers and
braces.
My research paper was the controversial topic of early treatment in Orthodontics. In my research
I found that most Orthodontist will not treat children under 12 years old because they are
undeveloped. Treating them before this does straighten teeth but it usually leads to them having
to have treatment again later in life which can be very costly. It was hard for me to actually get to
work on patients because I am not qualified, but I still needed to make a product. I realized that
usually children who obtain early treatment and need braces later in life are then in their adult
hood and most likely don’t want to be seen in braces. This can be seen as embarrassing for them
or even unprofessional. I chose to learn and make the intricate molds for the incognito braces
which are braces that are behind the teeth and not visible to others. Incognito braces are growing
in popularity and I feel as if it will be a huge advancement to normal braces in the near future.
After my project I realized I still did want to be an Orthodontist. I loved the variety of patients I
got to see and the variety of treatments that needed to be done. Every person was different and it
all seemed like a fun puzzle to be figured out, and when the puzzle was done it was amazing.
When I saw people come out of braces and loving the results it was just a priceless feeling. Next
year I will be attending Piedmont College where I will be majoring in biochemistry and also
playing soccer. Then I hope to transfer to the University of Alabama to attend their dental school.
The senior project has been very educational and a huge help to my future. It has been very
stressful and tedious at times, but the result was really rewarding. I think all seniors can benefit
from a capstone project like this and even though it seems really difficult for some, for me it was
more rewarding than a burden.
Sincerely,
Jessica Reyes
