Becoming a fellow of the APA shows a psychiatrist’s

community as well. To begin the application process for
fellowship status, psychiatrists are required to meet a variety
of exacting criteria:
- current status as an APA member in good standing
- up-to-date certification from one of the three foremost North
American medical governing bodies (the American Board of
Psychiatry, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of
Canada, or the American Osteopathic Association)
3. APA Fellow
- completion of a 30-day review period during
which the applicant’s regional APA branch may
submit comments pertaining to his or her
reputation
- approval from the APA’s Membership Committee
and the Board of Trustees
Once a member receives fellow status, he or she
may obtain the superior designation of
distinguished fellow. This title is bestowed upon
psychiatrists who have been APA members for at
least eight years, have been nominated by their
district or state association, and have received
three letters of recommendation from existing
distinguished fellows.
