UNICEF Helps 120,000 Fight Cholera in Mali
1. UNICEF, Helping Thousands of People Fight Cholera, by Jose Trespalacios
UNICEF, or the United Nations Children’s Fund, was established in 1946 to provide aid to at-risk children
in underdeveloped countries. In July, 2012, the organization announced that it was sending 20,000
water, sanitation, and hygiene kits to Mali as part of an effort to combat cholera. Kits include jerry cans,
buckets, and a six-month supply of soap and water purification tablets that each serve a family of six.
These kits will help approximately 120,000 residents, half of whom are children, to fight against a recent
cholera outbreak that killed six children in the first week.
If you’re interested in supporting UNICEF’s humanitarian endeavors, visit the website at
www.unicef.org. The nonprofit accepts volunteers interested in going overseas to help in developing
countries. You can also donate money to the cause at the website.
