Dear Judges:
Hi, my name is Jordan Gates. I’m 17 years old, making me one of the
younger seniors here at Creekview. This is the school where I’ve spent all
four years making friends and learning through both successes and also
mistakes. From this project and from my senior year experiences I’ve
learned to take what is handed to me and make the best of it regardless.
When I was in the 8th grade my mother became involved with a Kenya
ministry rooted in Eldoret that aimed to help the destitute children attend
school and sustain life. Over the years the whole family grew to work with
the overseas mission and our love and desire to help the people grew. In my
sophomore year we were given the opportunity to travel to Kenya with a
team of 13 and see the benefits of our years of work. After that trip a wish to
help the Kenya people was seeded in my heart.
For my paper I conducted research on the benefits of American aid on
foreign countries such as Kenya. I learned that smaller ministries, such as
the one I’m involved in, were one of the main supporters of aid to third
world countries. While organizations such as UNAID and UNICEF
dominated, a notable portion of aid came from smaller ministries. These
more focused groups were also able to go straight to the people and help
them on a more personal level. This was encouraging news for my senior
project, which was helping start up a new Kenyan ministry called Jesus Love
by creating and designing a website to raise awareness for the cause. The
ministry aims to teach valuable skills such as sewing to street girls in
Eldoret. Giving them a way to provide an income for their families is a very
important factor in ensuring their survival and success.
This project taught me to deal with various issues as they arise. Such as
trouble communicating with my Kenyan team and problems regarding
permission to raise funds. In the end it was decided to simply create a
website as a tool to hand over at the end of the year to the mission leader
2. Rev. Kurui. The website will help him as a blog to reach out to supporters
and grow in their profession. From this I learned that I’m a more of a hands-
on person versus behind the scenes being a web designer. I prefer to go out
and see the people, to help build and feed, but in the end I realized that this
website will make all that possible in the future. I hope that through this new
web page the ministry will be able to gather more support for their great
cause. There were many upsets in creating this project, such as difficulty
figuring out how to work word press, but the importance of the cause pushed
me onward.
Thank you all so much for your time and I appreciate your being here to
view my presentation.
Sincerely,
Jordan Gates
