2. I have done some research to discover what the
conventions of a magazine front cover are, the
way that I have carried out my research is
inductive and I have analysed a wide range of
magazine covers
The conventions that I have found are:
Kicker
Mastheads
Cover line
Feature article with photo
Headline
Plug /Anchorage
3. Masthead
Banner
This shows the
name of the
magazine in bright
green letters, this
is to draw people’s
attention to
it, however the
main photo is
covering the title
which infers that
the story is more
important than the
name of the
magazine
This is hear to give the audience a
quick insight into the stories that are
inside the magazine, and to get the
audience’s attention so that they buy
the magazine, so they can read the
articles
Secondary stories
Feature photo
The point of this
is to act as a
visual aid to the
main headline or
it is too grab
people’s
attention, the
type of audience
that they are
trying to appeal to
dictates who or
Plug
This is the offer of
something free, its
purpose is to act as
an incentive for the
audience to buy the
magazine
Her posture is soft and comforting, so
as to calmly invite the reader to the
magazine. The background is white
and as such this causes the model to
stand out more
These are here to
beef up the
magazine and to
help to grab the
audiences attention
and to get them to
buy the magazine,
however it goes
against convention
as it is located on
the left hand side
which is usually
empty to put more
4. Inviting quote
Masthead
It is a quote from the
main article and it is
designed to invoke
interest in the article for
the audience to go and
buy the magazine.
The quote is chosen as it
provides a sense of
intrigue and a sense that
you need to know what
the quote is about
They have decided to put the
name in capital red letters,
which shows that the name is
there to catch the eye of the
reader. Another thing is that
the name is in front of the
main photo which shows that
the magazine is more
important than the content
Secondary articles
This is to fill in some
extra space by
informing the
audience of some
extra content and in
this to list some of
the featured artists
Body Posture and Semiotics
The way that he is dressed as we can see Is formal
and professional which gives off the feeling off this
being a sophisticated magazine aimed at the more
mature audience members
Feature photo
The photo is in black and
white and it is a close up
and the model is looking
straight at the camera, this
demonstrates a very
confident approach to
drawing the audience
in, and the colour scheme
sets it apart because the
usual convention is that the
over pictures are usually
colourful and not black and
white
