Props are one of the most important elements in all visual
media. A prop is an object, used by a character or cast,
props can indicatedifferent elements to an audience. An
example would be a a knife, this indicates to us that the
person holdingthe item is violent, angry and is ready to
strikesomeone or something.
In our production we have a largeverity of props that are
used to portray a characters traits and emotions, without
openly expressingthem. Below is a breakdown of the props
we are going to use, each scene will be different as our
production covers historic elements, in which items of the
time will beused to showthe time of history the scene is
in.
Weapons
Amount Cost (£) Scene
5 0.56 Battle For
Canford
Flint lock replica pistol – Scene: Historic
Battle of The South West
To make the century seem obvious and will
quickly be picked up to our audience, we are
usingfake, non-firingweaponry from the
time period. We’re also primary usingitto
indicateviolenceand tragedy when being
used in our scene.
This prop rightaway will signify violencewith
the potential of death and injury, even
though itwill not actually fire.
Implications, portrayal.
The characters thatare usingthis prop are
British Mercenaries and Local Militia. In the
scene there will be4 actors on each side,
which 5 of the 8 will havethis prop. Again,
havinga character hold or even carry one of
these shows the audience that they are
willingto give their lives for a causeor even
themselves as well as causeviolence. Also it
gives the characters power, making itseem
they can change the outcome of the event,
which will definitely catch the audience’s
attention plus to help keep onto the story of
the scene. In our caseboth sides want to
destroy each other, the Militia wantto
preserve the peace they have and the Mercs
want to destroy them for the cash they were
promised.
Ethic/religious affects
Usinga weapon in any production is proneto
causea problem. People now days don’t
really think much of violenceon the big
screen but it is still a major issuein television
and filmproduction. Havinga violentscene
must be carefully thought out, to avoid
promoting violenceto the audienceand to
avoid offending the audience.
Objective of prop usage
We want to be as realistic to a fictional battle
as possible,which means usingweapons
from the time period. To make the battle
seem somewhat believableweapons from
the time period will be used to again get the
audienceinto the setting As well as being
drawn into the drama scene.
-Captain Jack Sparrow, Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds
end
Weapons likes these are heavily linked to the piracy age,
usingthis prop will get people into the frame of mind of the
time period. Makingitmore believable.Even though the
battle is made up fiction.Famous films such as Pirates of The
Caribbean havemade people more aware of old historic
weaponry.
Prop usage:
British:
British Mercenary Captain
British Mercenary 1
British Mercenary 2
Other:
Canford Militia 1
Canford Militia 2

Canford
Flint lock replica rifle - Scene: Historic
Battle of The South West
This prop will beused in the same scene
as the other weapon above, but this will
have slightly similarimplicationsthan the
pistol.
Implications, portrayal.
The implicationsof this prop aremore or
less the same as the prop above. It’ll most
certainly createthe feelingof a potential
death maker and as well implying
violence.
3 characters will bearmed with this prop,
2 from the British and 1 from the other
side.
Ethic/religious affects
Again, usingany sortof weapon will most
certainly createsome disapproval in an
audiencedepending how the prop is being
used. Most films have the most realistic
lookingweapons with effects. As our
production is relatively lowbudget we
won’t be usingany of the special affects
holly wood uses we will be editingin
affects such as smoke, bullets and
projectiles. As well if we want to capture
in a public area we will haveto get
something to indicatethat we are
shootinga production this can be a sign to
a walk up conversation with the public.
Objective of prop usage
We want to be as realistic to a fictional
battle as possible,which means using
weapons from the time period. To make
the battle seem somewhat believable
weapons from the time period will be
used to again get the audienceinto the
setting As well as being drawn into the
drama scene.
-French Line Infantry, Napoleonic Wars
The flintlock rifleor the musket was used in the early 15th
century up until the early 18th century. Muskets are
stereotypical weaponry to find in the 16th to the 18th century
and can quickly set the stage of what time period the scene is in.
Prop usage:

British Mercenary 3
Other:
Canford Militia 3
Canford Militia 4

Viins Stick – Scene: Cranborne
Viins stick will be used by Viin Lyee during the scene
based in Cranborne
Implications, portrayal.
This prop shows that Viin is injured in someway and
that he needs assistance, the reason we chose a stick
over a proper walkingstick is thata wild stick gives the
impression thatViin looks to the wild for help and
works with the environment, making up his
representation as a farmer.
Ethic/religious affects
The prop will makeViin look injured, with his
background could be connoted at something perhaps
racist,makingVietnam look weak.
Objective of prop usage
Viin needs to look worked, the stick that aids himwill
defiantly help his overall appearanceand stance. We
want this prop to make Viin looked worked and injured
as itwill showhis dedication to his community and his
devotion to his local environment. In total givinghima
positiverepresentation. Along with actingthe stick
helps drastically with settingViins personality.
-Viin’s Stick
A normal wild stick found in the heathland, the stick measures
134 cm in height.
Prop usage:
Viin Lyee - Cranborne
Viins Barely – Scene: Cranborne
Viins Barely will beused by Viin Lyee duringthe scene
based in Cranborne
Implications, portrayal.
We want Viin to be linked to his agriculture. To link himin
with his Farmingbackground,we have used many
stereotypical elements that make up a farmer. The barley
in his mouth shows the audiencethat he is involved
somehow with rural stateaffairs makinghima value to his
community. The representation of farmers down here in
the south of England are very positiveand well respected.
We want Viins character to give off the vibe of being
friendly, always wantingto help and givingback to his
community, usingbarely as well as costume help the
audienceget this implication and can connectthe two
together very quickly and easily.
Ethic/religious affects
There is no real issuewith usingthis prop with the
character what so ever. Actually itcreates a positive
character,or helps towards makinga positivecharacter for
our production
