Mononucleosis Mono is a common cause of persistent sore throat,
fatigue, and fever in young patients. 95 percent of
adults between ages thirty-five and forty have been
infected with the virus that causes mono. Mono is a
viral illness but gives a similar clinical picture to strep:
sore throat.
White matter on the tonsils, fever, and
swollen glands. Mono can have unusual
complications. For instance, the liver or
spleen might swell due to mono infection.
Trauma or injury to the abdomen of
someone with mono can cause life-
threatening internal bleeding. For this
reason, doctors warn atheletes with mono
not to participate in contact sports for six
weeks.

Sore throat 784.10 Throat pain: A sore throat is among the most
common reasons to visit a doctor, accounting for
approximately 12 million clinic visits each year in the
United States, with patients and insurance companies
spending an estimated $1.2 billion annually to
address the problem. The average cost of a clinic or
urgent care visit for a sore throat is anywhere from
$150 to $300, depending on what tests are ordered.
ER visits for sore throats are much more expensive.
Depending on whwere you live, an ER visit for a sore
throat can cost an average of $650.
Pain, discomfort or raw feeling of the
throat, especially when swallowing. If a
sore throat has lasted more than one week
or if you are xceedingly tired, you may
have mono. It is also possible to have
mono and strep at the same time. Sore
throats have numerous causes. Sore
throats can be serious enough to warrant
treatment or can heal on their own within
a few days. The most common cause of a
sore throat is viral illness, such as cold, the
flu, or mono. The next most common
cause is strep throat, which is caused by a
bacterium (streptoccus).

As per the guidelines issued by the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA), hospitals are required to provide necessary medical care to all
ED patients, regardless of a patient's ability to afford treatment.
2.00 Bed allocation is a complex procedure which is dependent on several factors such as patient clinical attributes as well as the availability of resources in
the ED.
The four-hour time frame is a a guideline limit for boarding patients in the ED as per the Joint Commission.
4.00 The Joint Commission has emphasized the need for smoothing ED patient flow and, in January 2005, implemented a new leadership standard, managing patient flow,
which mandates that hospitals "β¦develop and implement plans to identify and mitigate impediments to efficient patient flow throughout the hospital."
5.00 Other organizations, include the Institute for Medicine, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality Improvement, and Instititute for Healthcare Improvement, have
also emphasized the valuable effect streamlining ED operations has on hospital operations and patient outcomes.
6.00 Pain is common. About 9 in 10 Americans regularly suffer from pain, and pain is the most common reason individuals seek health care. Each year, an estimated 25
million Americans experience acute pain due to injury or surgery another 50 million suffer chronic pain.
