2. 1998 - 2005
• Safety EP (1998): This was their first ever music
release and Chris Martin was a massive fan of
Leonard Cohen and before the band established
their own sound, they attempted to sound
similar to Cohen.
• Parachutes (2000): This was when their sound
became more distinctive and original, however
teir image was still normal and bland.
• A Rush of Blood to the Head (2002): The band’s
sound was now very established and original; the
memorable guitar riff in In My Place and the
vibrant piano melody in Clocks. They started
wearing all black with smart shirts which caused
Noel Gallagher to say that Coldplay looked like
geography teachers.
• X&Y (2005): Despite Gallagher’s comments,
Coldplay maintained their image but their sound
became even more powerful and experimental.
They used spoons and wine glasses in the song
Low and many of the other songs on the album
would change tempo and melody halfway
through, for example Square One and Fix You
3. 2008-2012
• Viva La Vida or Death And All His
Friends (2008): The band had a
new producer for this album;
Brian Eno. Eno was very
experimental and encouraged the
band to change the way they make
music eg sound and writing. They
also adopted a military, rough
looking image with song titles
discretely placed on their clothes.
• Mylo Xyloto (2011) They dueted
with Rhianna. They created a
symbol for each song on the
album which can be seen on their
clothes.
