Evaluation Question 1
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms
and conventions of real media products?
Masthead are both similar as they both use a bold font using the colour red which
helps draws the readers attention and makes the masthead look recognisable.
Both backgrounds are white which helps the colour red stand out.
Both magazines have cover lines that highlight text in the colour red to draw the
readers attention towards it
The main cover line also includes the main artists name.
Both use smaller fonts for the other cover lines.
Both magazines uses the main cover line to act as an anchor for the models which
will suggest to the reader that they will be interviewed or talked about frequently
through out the magazine so readers will want to read on about the models.
Both magazines connotes the rap genre using its colour scheme, mise en scene and the main image. This is because the colour scheme in both magazines are used frequently in rap magazines as
the colour red has connotations of it being quite an aggressive colour in which links with the rap genre. Also both magazines includes the models posing while looking at the reader which makes
the reader feel more special as they will feel more included and it also catches the readers attention. Both models also have a hand gesture in which symbolises urban behaviour and links with
the rap genre. The two main images also has the denotations of the rappers wearing expensive clothing and accessories as my magazine has the model wear an expensive looking coat as the fur
denotates this, he is also seen to be wearing a pouch which makes him look more urban linking in with the genre and appealing to rap fans and he is also wearing a snapback, backwards which
makes him seem like he is apart of the rap genre, while the other magazine as the model wearing expensive jewellery which links with the rap genre.
Magazine similarities
The mastheads are different because the vibe masthead is faded red while my
magazine has a inner shadow effect and no faded look to it.
My masthead also comes behind the model which makes the logo look more
professional and eye catching. The vibe magazine has the logo coming in front of
the model which allows readers to make out the whole masthead.
The vibe magazine has cover lines on the right side of the magazine but my
magazine does not and this is because my model is placed on the right side.
My model is placed on the left side to make room for cover lines on the left but the
vibe has the model positioned in the middle of the page.
My magazine has a red back shape at the bottom and the top of the page, behind
the text making it stand out while the vibe magazine does not
My bar code is on the right, vibe is on the left, slightly bigger
The models in the magazine are positioned differently as the vibe magazine has the model in the center of the front cover magazine and in the
rule of thirds, this makes the model stand out the most as he is the main focus and stands out the most, also having him in the middle connotes
his importance as well as anchoring him to the magazine to convey his involvement with the magazine, while as my magazine has my model on
the right side of the magazine which is not as effective as having it in the middle but it allows more coverlines to be placed on the left side.
Magazine differences
Drawn drafts differences
My drawn draft had the model in the middle of the page while my
magazine had the model positioned on the right of the page
The models have different poses as the draft had the model standing up
with his hands in his coat pockets while the final piece has the model
sitting down making a hand gesture towards the viewer.
The draft has no text along the top or the bottom
The bar code is smaller in the draft
The price was cheaper in the draft and is placed in the top right while the
final piece has the price on the bottom right out of sight which is more
expensive
The draft includes a pug at the bottom left
The draft has a secondary image while the final piece does not
How I followed codes and conventions
• I have followed codes and conventions while creating my magazine as I have made a
masthead and positioned it at the top of the page which draws the readers attention to
the magazine and it will also be recognisable as it will usually be the first thing the reader
will see. I have also added cover lines, a main cover line, issue number/date, price and
barcode which all makes the magazine look genuine and real and definitely follows the
codes and conventions of the magazine these additions are commonly found in most
magazines, mainly rap magazines. I have also broke codes and conventions because I
placed my main image on the right side when most magazines have the main image in
the middle of the page. However this is not a major flaw to my magazine as it still can be
recognised as a rap magazine because of the conventions and codes that are followed by
the denotations of my model which links to the rap genre as he is wearing urban looking
clothing. I also have made sure that there is only one image on the front cover to make
the main image stand out more and be the main focus and this follows codes and
conventions because most rap magazines are similar to this. I have also made sure that
the more important parts of the magazine are highlighted in red or the font colour is in
red to draw the readers attention to the more important bits of the magazine. My
magazine clearly appeals to fans of the rap genre as the magazine follows the codes and
conventions for rap magazine and this magazine will appeal to male teenagers and young
men aged 16-21 as it looks a lot more aggressive and urban than most other mainstream
magazines such as pop.
Both pages has the model on the side of the page
Both pages has the contents on the opposite side of the model
Both pages has the contents under the features
Both has the mastheads at the top of the page, which helps the
mastheads to become memorable.
Both pages includes the page numbers of the contents
Both models uses direct mode of address towards the reader as
they both look to the reader which makes the reader feel more
included.
Contents Page similarities
My magazine has the model on the right side of the page, looking
towards the viewer. The other magazine has the model on the left side
of the page.
My magazine has the model’s body facing towards the reader while the
other magazine has the body facing away from the viewer, to give of a
more rap look to it.
The background is different as my final piece has a brick background
with the logo in grey placed at the back to give it a more unique look to
it while the other magazine has just a plain white background.
My magazine includes secondary images which anchors the rap artists
in the magazine, while the other does not.
Contents Page differences
How I followed codes and conventions
For my contents page the codes and conventions I
have followed to make my magazine link in with
the rap genre is that I successfully utilized an
aggressive colour scheme which links the rap
genre. I also added my masthead at the top to get
my masthead in the readers head making it
memorable, I have also added contents on this
page with different category's which separate the
contents in their own sections making it easier to
navigate through the magazine. I have broken
codes and conventions as I had the model look
towards the reader in the contents page which
although makes the reader feel special, it distracts
the reader.
Contents Page differences
The masthead design looks different
The final piece has the page numbers added to it
The final piece had category's while the draft does not
The secondary images are on the right on the final piece
Social media is located near the center of the page on
the final piece instead of the bottom left.
Double page spread differences
The colour scheme is different. My final piece uses a red
black and white to connote aggression while the other
magazine uses a gold, black and white colour scheme
which connotes wealth.
My magazine has the an image for the whole
background while the other has one image on the left
side
My magazine has more columns than the magazine
being compared to
Double page spread differences
The draft has the model in the middle of the page but
the final piece has him on the right side. This is because
if the model was in the middle, the two pages will
separate there, leaving a crease and a gap between the
models face.
The drawn draft had a white background while the final
piece had a outdoor, brick background.
How I followed codes and conventions
My double page spread follows the codes
and conventions which makes it link to the
genre rap by its colour scheme which
appeals to rap fans. I have also added my
masthead at the top which makes the
masthead become more memorable,
underneath I added the title which sums
up what this double page spread will be
about. The article used also links in with
the rap genre as it uses slang. Finally the
main image is fitted so it acts as a
background and has the model looking
towards the viewer, anchoring to the
article.
