KARMEN 3 Minutes)
Election results and subsequent events were the catalyst for our project - wanted to find a way to bring people together and talk about themselves: similarities, differences, friends, community, just to name a few topics. Could also mention events on our campuses.

Address change in direction since June presentation to LEAD
Strong feedback (...event best option, and then tier 2 of project). This shifted our focus and direction of the project.
What’s Connect4U all about?
Connect4U is an annual, half-day event that engages various principles and practices of restorative justice to foster connections across and through communities at the University of Minnesota (Twin Cities, Morris).
Connect4U seeks to utilize circle process and restorative practices to build community among students, staff and faculty, and to create a sense of belonging and safety for all of us through empathic connections.
Pre-Event: Connect4U will form a steering committee that will recruit and train circle process and event volunteers. Trained volunteers will be selected based on previous training and background with the circle process to aid in marketing and facilitating the event. (i.e. Student Housing and Residential Life, MN Restorative Practice Coalition). Moreover, participants will be asked to complete an event registration form (accessible format). Committee members will identify a physical space adequate for (100) participants. A modest budget for posters, light foods and refreshments will be established (i.e. estimated budget of $400 requested for each location - Twin Cities & Morris). In addition, steering committee will utilize people-power to advertise and promote the event via email, Facebook event, Eventbrite, flyers and word of mouth. We will send invitations also to University-wide target groups such as athlete coaches, chair of Republican student group.

Event: The event will feature circle process as the way to encourage participants to develop meaningful connections and relationships. The circle process creates a distinctive kind of space for dialogue.
1. The event will start with registration and networking
2. The welcome/intro will be led by a guest speaker with strong expertise in restorative justice in high-ed. The speaker presentation will be streamed simultaneously at Morris campus. We will connect with the office of public engagement which has started some initiatives to create a community of practice focused on restorative justice.
3. After our guest speaker, attendees will break into groups to have a conversation through circle process.
a. We will have several circles with about 10 people in each. The process will be facilitated by volunteers trained in circle process. We will recruit our volunteer circle facilitators from different sources including the Student Housing & Residential Life who we know already embrace this practice and counts with trained facilitators.
b. Circle process is initiated by the facilitator or circle keeper by explaining how circles work, reading expectations on how to participate in the circle, having an opening which can be reading a passage or a poem, then the keeper will ask a question or prompt to the group and starting pass the taking piece to participants. Once the talking piece has passed to all participants and returns to the keeper, the keeper can ask the following question. We want to allow participants to listen to each other so we will not plan on having more than 3 prompts.
c. Each circle will be provided with the same opening, prompts and closing process. The core prompt for the circles will be “who are you at the U?” and “how can we connect with people on campus in a safe way?” Circle will be closing by asking participants “how was your experience in circle?” which will serve also for the steering committee to assess how the process was received by participants.
JENNIFER (1-2 Minutes)
Participants and facilitators will:
Leave with a heightened sense of well-being, connection, and belonging;
Gain greater awareness and skills in paradigms and practices of collaborative leadership;
Establish grassroots, community based collaboration for more attention to justice and community across campuses in the UMN system;
Develop an infrastructure for meaningful conversations about issues impacting campus climate; and
Reduce bias incidents and increase commitment to equity, diversity and social justice.
PHYLLIS (2-3 Minutes)
We plan to implement post-event assessment at three levels:
As part of closing the circle process (how was your experience in circle?);
Via a conventional survey (Google Form) highlighting logistics (enough space, enough time, enough food, accommodations, etc.); and
Through steering committee assessment and analysis of survey data to determine event success and future planning changes.
TAMMY (2-3 Minutes--I am happy to revise this tomorrow in the context of our group’s work, for now I am pulling this off the two pager so we have something to work from)
Taking Connect4U forward, we are hoping to build upon our event and programming to continue creating community partnerships, mentorship and individual connections. One idea to continue this initiative and engagement is to establish an online portal (resource) that provides individuals an opportunity to connect individuals around issues involving the University community. In addition, the original steering committee will recruit two participants (one faculty or staff, one student) from the cohort on each campus to gather insights about year one and help plan the following year’s event.
Build strength through expanding the ripple of participants
The committee will also:
Review event logistics;
Submit a common post-event report to the OED (UMTC) and the EDI (Morris);
Identify and reserve date, and spaces for next event;
Identify and recruit keynote speaker(s);
Request and seek additional funding;
Recruit people from other campuses (Crookston, Duluth, Rochester) to serve planning group
Bring year Connect4U2 to fruition in 2019; and
Establish rotation among members of planning group so that no one serves more than three consecutive years.
Is someone from our group talking about this, we all say 2 sentences, or we open the floor for questions here?? (this is Abi)
