Minerals are a major proportion of the additives used in compounding polymers and many have multiple
functions to add value, for example as flame retardants, antiblock and pigments. There is also a role as fillers. At
the top end of the value chain are the nanoclays in nanocomposites. The mineral particle size, shape, surface
area and matrix compatibility are all important factors affecting performance. It is also critical to understand
mineral chemistry to choose the best products for each polymer. Surface treatments and modifiers can be
utilized to improve mineral-polymer interaction and dispersion. Alternative materials such as natural fibers
are being used to replace mineral fillers, a topic that can be debated at the conference.
