Defaults: When you speak about Nudge, defaults means that you make a decision for people, that do the least harm and most good. We all know the feeling when we need to do something, because it is for the best, but we are simple to lazy or stressed to do it, and in the end we never get it done.
Fx a lot of people want to be organ donors, but many of these people never fill out the form. I wanted to be one since I turned 18, but not untill I moved and got the card automatically with my new socialcard, did I fill out the form. I was 21!
Feedback is about providing visible and immediate feedback. An example is that in most cars these days, there is a light and sometimes a sound that tells you if you haven’t fastened your seat belt.
That makes more people wear seatbelts because they don’t want to drive around with an annoying sound in the car.
An incentive is something that motivates an individual to perform an action. We have all tried to have some old stuff at home we want to give away for free, but we never get rid of it because WE don’t get anything out of it.
But now a lot of companies have made compaings where you can “ byt-til-nyt”. Then people go and deliver their old phones or whatever, because they then get disount on a new one – then they get something out of it!
Again, people are lazy.So the art of making something complex NOT complex is what structured choices is all about.
Take for example YouTube. They have categorized all videos so that you can easily find the videos that you are interested in.The same thing on Pinterest. Here you can chose a category or just go through the most popular pictures.
Visible goals are very important in our everyday life. People are more productive when they can see the goal in front of them. Showing the result on the way is making people more engage to a project .
Fx on my work, my boss buys free ticket to the movie theatre and put it on our desk. Then if we reach the goal, we get the free tickets so we can go and watch a movie. That motivates us a lot, because we can see the tickets right in front of us (and we get free popcorn as well)
Nudge can be used when the designer wishes to modify certain behavior.Try to analyze what the users want and make their wishes come true by setting up default choices.Make the feedback clear and visible.
Motivate the user to perform an action by setting up desired goals.Try to make a simple structure that makes the decision-making easy and desirable. And last but not least, make the goals visible for the user!
A fun story is that in Amsterdams airport a lot of men pied out site the toilet. Then they put up an image on an fly and suddenly they reduced 80 % spillage. Why? Because when people see a target they want to hit it.
It was such asucces, so in a bar on iceland they did the same thing. This time, they did it with pictures of bankers who left the country after they financial crisis. Now you can literally pie on the person you don’t like!
But how can you use this on your blog? Well you need to think about what people want and see the pattern they want to go. You should think about them as lazy, and then make the pattern for them!
For example put the most relevant blogpost on your frontpage, and force them to click on the “read more” button by only showing them some of the post.
