1. Experience
Previously, I have had the benefit of managing two large organisations in PNG namely Air Niugini
Limited and Shell PNG limited and operating subsidiary of the multilateral corporation Shell.
Afterthe airline’s8th
yearof operation Itookon the role of its firstNational General Manager (1981-
1984) for a period of 4 years and later became the company’s Chairman for a period of 9 years,
assistingthe airline’sgrowthandexpansionin modernising its fleet of aircraft and its domestic and
international routes.
On joining Shell PNG Limited as its General Manager (1984 – 1989) my executive team was
instrumental in benchmarkingShell PNGLtd,asthe “market leader”inthe supplyanddistributionof
petroleum products within PNG and Solomon Islands.
As the executivemanagerof both businesses,itenabledme topromulgate the strategic direction of
both companies based on the knowledge of each of the companies operating business issues and
their competitive position in PNG and the region.
It alsoallowedme toempower regionalofficesof AirNiugini andShell PNGtoapplydecisionmaking
initiatives and their supply chain management to meet the companies’ growing demands in sales
and revenue by capitalising on the emerging business opportunities in their respective markets.
Government Service Experience
Prior to joining the private sector, my services to the Government during self- government period
1973 – 1975 and after independence (1975 – 1977) were most fulfilling. My focus on civil aviation
helpedinassisting with the development of Domestic and International Air Transport Policies and
Regulations for the newly independent State, PNG and the country’s subsequent recognition and
signatory to the International Civil Aviation Organisation, Montreal, Canada.
I became quite involved as the Team Leader for the PNG Negotiating Team in discussing Air Traffic
Rightsfor PNGNational CarrierAirNiugini toprovide commercial air services to and from Australia,
Indonesia,Philippines, NewZealand,Japan,Fiji,SolomonIslands, UnitedKingdomforHongKongand
United States of America for Honolulu and Guam. These rights remain prevalent today with Air
Niugini providing bi-lateral air services to a number of these countries.
After obtaining two post graduate degrees in aviation at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in
Miami, Florida, USA, I took on the responsibility as Secretary, Department of Transport and Civil
Aviation and later became the General Manager, Air Niugini.
