3. THE EVOLUTION

The Evolution from the 90’s style comedy theoretically has not evolved
dramatically. Taking into account my 90’s case study of ‘Mrs Doubtfire’ which is
a film where the comedy is made from exaggerating real life situations such as
divorces and custody. Within ‘Meet the Parents’ (although this is just one case
study) this film does very much the same. Taking the idea of meeting the
parents of your other half and it being a total nightmare. They play on this idea
by exaggerating it for comedic effect. The film really enhances ‘cringe’ humour
in this film basing the entire comedy and plot on that basis whereas the cringe
humour used in ‘Mrs Doubtfire’ is a little more light hearted.

However this is only one of many, many comedies taken from the 00’s and so is
not painting the image of every comedy of that era. It merely shows some
developed changes in the genre from 90’s and how these have shown change
in the genre have over time developed through silent, satire, spoof, absurd and
cringe humour.
