1. ***This is a 5-credit course, therefore the load is more than the standard 3-credit course***
Russian 101, First-Year Russian, Part I Mr. Evans
Fall 2014
Core Objectives
Russian 101-102 are focused on developing learners’ proficiency in speaking, reading, listening, and writing. These
courses also focus on developing learners’ cultural sensitivity. By the end of each course, students will:
1. speak, read, listen, and write at a level equivalent to Novice High or higher on the American Council of Teachers
of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) proficiency scale.
2. demonstrate control over basic aspects of Russian grammar, such as case usage and verb conjugation in
controlled settings.
3. demonstrate an emerging awareness of Russian cultural norms in a limited number of contexts within the scope
of learning experiences.
Course outcomes
By the end of Russian 102, you will be able to use common nouns and adjectives in all six Russian cases. You also will be
able to conjugate basic verbs in past, present, and future tense, and demonstrate increasing control of aspect.
Additionally, you will be able to carry on basic conversations in Russian on many topics from your daily lives (e.g., your
family, your interests, your schedule, your home, and your studies). You also will be able to write notes or simple letters
to Russian friends or keep a basic journal in Russian. Additionally, you will gain the ability to read signs, schedules, maps,
etc. in order to meet practical needs; you also will develop your ability to read simple texts on familiar topics with or
without a dictionary. You should also be able to understand short monologues and dialogues on a variety of topics,
primarily related to personal background and needs. In addition, you will learn about Russian culture and increase your
ability to use effective strategies for language learning and communication.
Required text and supplementary materials
1. Голоса (Golosa) Book One, 5th Edition by Robin, Evans-Romaine, Shatalina, & Robin
2. Student Activities Manual (SAM) to accompany Голоса (packaged with textbook)
3. Supplemental website https://www.gwu.edu/~slavic/golosa/
4. Class website: www.russ101.weebly.com
Study Habits and Homework
In order to learn Russian, you will have to do a lot of work outside of class. If you spend quality time at home learning
vocabulary and grammar, we can spend our time in class using your new knowledge. We will spend our class time
communicating in Russian--something that you cannot easily do at home. Reading grammar explanations and practicing
forms and vocabulary are best done outside of class, before we begin practicing. In order to make this system work, you
must read ahead of what we are working on in class. Here are a few suggestions that will help you:
1. Study and review vocabulary nightly. Some ideas: Make flashcards, label familiar items in your home, create
sentences with the words, listen to the new words using the audio files available here
(https://www.gwu.edu/~slavic/golosa/). Click on "Book 1," then on the right hand side of the page, select "5th
2. Edition Book 1." Under the heading Словарь, (the first thing listed under each chapter), you can listen to the
new words for the chapter. Practice writing the new words from dictation, again using the audio files
2. When you do your homework, write out all answers on a separate sheet of paper--this will allow you to easily
re-do any assignments that you have had trouble with (for additional practice).
3. Use the answer keys to check your work. Correct your work in a different colored ink, to make the changes
visible to your instructor and to yourself. If you note patterns of errors, make a note of the errors and make sure
to ask for clarification in class.
4. When preparing for dialogues, make sure to use the audio files. Listen carefully to them; pause the file, and
repeat. To really perfect your pronunciation, record yourself reading the dialogues and compare your
pronunciation and intonation against the audio recordings.
5. Form a study group and meet once a week to quiz each other, practice, and ask questions.
6. Faithfully attend the Conversation Lab.
Assignment Details
Attendance: Regular attendance is required. Quality of preparation and participation impacts both individual students
and the class as a whole. You will have five free absences during the semester. Each subsequent absence will result in
an overall grade reduction, e.g., A to A-, A- to B+, etc.
Culture presentations: Each student will give a 5-minute presentation in English on a topic related to Russian culture of
his/her choice. Presentations will take place on Fridays, except when unit exams are scheduled. Assignments will be
made at the beginning of the semester.
Dialogues: At the start of each chapter, you and a partner will choose a dialogue from the textbook to
memorize and personalize and perform in front of the class. For each of these assignments, you will be graded pass/fail.
You will receive a grade of "pass" if you are prepared, and fail if you are not.
Conversation lab: Each week, students will meet with a TA for fifteen minutes in 3009G or 3009H of the Joseph Knight
Building (JKB) to practice speaking in Russian. TA office hours will be announced at the start of the semester.
Conversations will build on dialogues practiced in class.
Quizzes: Pop quizzes will be administered periodically at the beginning of class and will cover vocabulary and grammar
topics discussed previously in class and/or covered in homework assignments. Quizzes cannot be made up owing to
tardiness or absence.
Unit exams. Each unit will culminate in an exam scheduled over two days. The first day will cover reading, listening, and
grammar; the second day will cover speaking and composition.
Homework: Homework will be assigned daily and will consist of 1) assignments from the Student Activities Manual and
Student activities manual: You should write your answers out on a separate sheet of paper (or make copies of the pages
in the Student Activities Manual). You will be expected to correct your homework prior to submitting it using the key
provided. A different colored pen should be used for correction so that I can see your corrections easily. Your homework
will be graded according to the following scale:
0 Not turned in.
3. 1-3 Written work carelessly prepared and largely incomplete. Too many mistakes for this level.
4-6 Exercises incomplete or poorly done, with many significant mistakes that could be avoided at
this level.
7-8 Exercises completed, fairly well done with some errors that could be avoided at this level.
9-10 Exercises completed and demonstrate thought and attention. Very few errors for this level.

University Policies
Honor Code
In keeping with the principles of the BYU Honor Code, students are expected to be honest in all of their
academic work. Academic honesty means, most fundamentally, that any work you present as your own must in
fact be your own work and not that of another. Violations of this principle may result in a failing grade in the
course and additional disciplinary action by the university. Students are also expected to adhere to the Dress and
Grooming Standards. Adherence demonstrates respect for yourself and others and ensures an effective learning
and working environment. It is the university's expectation, and every instructor's expectation in class, that each
student will abide by all Honor Code standards. Please call the Honor Code Office at 422-2847 if you have
questions about those standards.
Sexual Misconduct
As required by Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, the university prohibits sex discrimination
against any participant in its education programs or activities. Title IX also prohibits sexual harassment-
including sexual violence-committed by or against students, university employees, and visitors to campus. As
outlined in university policy, sexual harassment, dating violence, domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking
are considered forms of "Sexual Misconduct" prohibited by the university.
University policy requires any university employee in a teaching, managerial, or supervisory role to report
incidents of sexual misconduct that come to their attention through various forms including face-to-face
conversation, a written class assignment or paper, class discussion, email, text, or social media post. If you
encounter sexual misconduct, please contact the Title IX Coordinator at t9coordinator@byu.edu or 801-422-
2130 or Ethics Point at https://titleix.byu.edu/report-concern or 1-888-238-1062 (24-hours). Additional
information about Title IX and resources available to you can be found at http://titleix.byu.edu.
Student Disability
Brigham Young University is committed to providing a working and learning atmosphere that reasonably
accommodates qualified persons with disabilities. If you have any disability which may impair your ability to
complete this course successfully, please contact the University Accessibility Center (UAC), 2170 WSC or 422-
2767. Reasonable academic accommodations are reviewed for all students who have qualified, documented
disabilities. The UAC can also assess students for learning, attention, and emotional concerns. Services are
coordinated with the student and instructor by the UAC. If you need assistance or if you feel you have been
unlawfully discriminated against on the basis of disability, you may seek resolution through established
grievance policy and procedures by contacting the Equal Employment Office at 422-5895, D-285 ASB.

Description
Classroom Procedures
Becoming proficient in Russian means developing culturally appropriate language skills in addition to
understanding how the language works. Language skills are developed through continuous and meaningful
practice, including practice in using the language to communicate with others. In class we will use a variety of
practice activities and language tasks that require you to interact with others. These are designed to supplement
the individual study and preparation that you can do best by yourself at home.
How to prepare:
Grammar Explanations: This class will be grammar and vocabulary intensive. For that reason, it is absolutely
critical that you study words pertained to the topic and read explanations of the grammar BEFORE you
come to class. Come prepared with questions. I will focus on those points that I think are particularly
difficult or that we need to practice, but will not spend time on grammar points that I think are well
explained the textbook unless you ask questions about them. Please do not hesitate to ask questions! If
something is unclear to you, chances are that others in the class have difficulty with the same concept.

Honor Code
22. In keeping with the principles of the BYU Honor Code, students are expected to be honest in all of their academic work.
Academic honesty means, most fundamentally, that any work you present as your own must in fact be your own work
and not that of another. Violations of this principle may result in a failing grade in the course and additional disciplinary
action by the university. Students are also expected to adhere to the Dress and Grooming Standards. Adherence
demonstrates respect for yourself and others and ensures an effective learning and working environment. It is the
university's expectation, and every instructor's expectation in class, that each student will abide by all Honor Code
standards. Please call the Honor Code Office at 422-2847 if you have questions about those standards.
Sexual Misconduct
As required by Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, the university prohibits sex discrimination against any
participant in its education programs or activities. Title IX also prohibits sexual harassment-including sexual violence-
committed by or against students, university employees, and visitors to campus. As outlined in university policy, sexual
harassment, dating violence, domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking are considered forms of "Sexual
Misconduct" prohibited by the university.
University policy requires any university employee in a teaching, managerial, or supervisory role to report incidents of
sexual misconduct that come to their attention through various forms including face-to-face conversation, a written
class assignment or paper, class discussion, email, text, or social media post. If you encounter sexual misconduct, please
contact the Title IX Coordinator at t9coordinator@byu.edu or 801-422-2130 or Ethics Point at
https://titleix.byu.edu/report-concern or 1-888-238-1062 (24-hours). Additional information about Title IX and
resources available to you can be found at http://titleix.byu.edu.
Student Disability
Brigham Young University is committed to providing a working and learning atmosphere that reasonably accommodates
qualified persons with disabilities. If you have any disability which may impair your ability to complete this course
successfully, please contact the University Accessibility Center (UAC), 2170 WSC or 422-2767. Reasonable academic
accommodations are reviewed for all students who have qualified, documented disabilities. The UAC can also assess
students for learning, attention, and emotional concerns. Services are coordinated with the student and instructor by
the UAC. If you need assistance or if you feel you have been unlawfully discriminated against on the basis of disability,
you may seek resolution through established grievance policy and procedures by contacting the Equal Employment
Office at 422-5895, D-285 ASB.

Course Information
Core Objectives
The aim of this course is to help you improve and advance your abilities in Russian. Each of the four major
skills - speaking, listening, reading and writing – will be emphasized with an increased focus (more than in
prerequisite courses) on reading and writing. In addition, this course will focus on reviewing and strengthening
grammar fundamentals as well as understanding more advanced concepts of the Russian grammar system. By
taking a multifaceted approach to increasing proficiency in Russian, the aim is to help you progress to or within
the advanced levels according the ACTFL scale.
Learning Outcomes
This is the first of a two-course series that focuses primarily on the formal elements of the Russian language and
aims to improve students' command of it in the following three ways:
1. Grammar—a deliberate effort will be made to bring attention to and study fundamentals of Russian
grammar and to practice them.
2. Writing—and narrative writing compositions aimed at improving command of one's language
3. Reading—short texts designed to supply content for writing composition and class discussion

Description and Purpose of Class Texts
Modern Russian. For each class period you will be assigned one or two chapters from the Offord
textbook. Accordingly, you will be responsible for the following: 1) reading the assigned chapters, 2)
completing the exercises at the end of each assigned chapter, 3) completing online practice and drills at
http://russiandrills.byu.edu/testing/, and 4) checking your work using the answer key. These four tasks comprise
bulk of your grammar review and learning. Each day there will be an opportunity to ask questions and to clarify
if needed. I encourage you to write down your questions so that you remember them during class. I am available
in my office hours and by email (mrjeremyevans@gmail.com) as well. You are responsible for making certain
you understand the concepts and I will supplement your studies and efforts with in-class exercises and practice.
There will be grammar quizzes once a week on Fridays that will cover the grammar points from the previous
week.
Advanced Russian Reader. Every other week you will be assigned a story from our reader. These
stories will serve primarily as conversation topics and topics for your essays. Two main reading strategies are
recommended and therefore you should plan on reading each story twice. The first reading do not look up more
than one or two words per page, instead focusing on understanding the basic plot. You are encouraged to
employ the reading strategy of guessing the meaning of words (in Russian, root words and prefixes/suffixes will
help tremendously). During the second reading, pay more careful attention to interesting grammatical structures
and make note of questions that arise. We will have class discussions about the reading and an opportunity to
ask those questions. Plan on discussing the stories in class and some basic plot questions on our weekly quizzes.
Additional Assignments
Essays. Every other week you will write a short essay, one page double-spaced, on a topic from our last
story. We will focus on the simpler writing tasks of description and narration. These essays are short, so I
expect you to put time into making them very sound grammatically. Looking up words and asking Russian
speaking friends or me may be needed in order to make the essays well-formulated. This is an opportunity to
practice the grammar and vocabulary you are studying.
Daily Summaries. In preparation for class each day you will read a very short article or news item and
prepare to summarize it in your own words. At the start of class you will briefly deliver the summary to another
student. One of you will be chosen randomly to give the summary to the entire class.
Supplemental “Strength Training”
Movie. Throughout the semester we will be watching clips from 12 стульев, a very popular Russian
movie. The exercises for these clips will introduce additional vocabulary that you will be asked to memorize,
and that will provide additional discussion topics as well as authentic and enjoyable listening practice.
Grading Breakdown:

Quizzes: 15%
Essays: 15%
