Want to learn how to save fuel? Learn from the best. Wayne Gerdes and his hypermilers know all the tips and tricks to getting better MPGs. These are the top 10 ways to save gas without endangering your car or your life.
2. Learn your route’s traffic patterns
and time your drive to get green
lights the whole way.
3. Park on the highest elevation and
face away from the store or your
home so you can glide out of the
spot to pick up speed naturally.
4. Focus on keeping your car’s
momentum steady—no harsh
braking or quick accelerations.
5. Leave several car lengths of a buffer on the
highway, and either eat it up or expand it to
keep from constantly braking in traffic.
6. Try not to use your AC, but don’t crack your
windows when you don’t have to, either. For a
slight breeze, turn your heat all the way on
cold for some fresh air.
7. Don’t use a roof rack—it wrecks your car’s
wind resistance and the added weight burns
more fuel.
8. Travel light. More weight = more fuel spent
moving it. Empty out your trunk often and
don’t carry heavy items unless you need to.
9. Use low rolling resistance tires, except for in
the winter when you may need a stronger
grip on the road.
10. Install an instant fuel economy gauge (about
$70). It will tell you when you’re saving and
when you’re burning fuel.
