2. Governor’s School 101
In order to be eligible for Governor’s School,
you must meet the minimum requirements.
You will have a busy few weeks with the
application process, but in the end, it will be
well worth it! Whether you are a finalist or
not…the process itself teaches you so much
about responsibility and honor.
If we can help you in any way, please just let us
know. Your packet is due October 21, 2013 to
the lead counselor at your school at 3:00pm.
NO LATE PACKETS WILL BE ACCEPTED.
3. What is Governor’s School?
The oldest statewide summer program
for academically, intellectually gifted
students
A 5 week program thriving upon the
intellectual curiosity of students.
No tests, no grades—just producers of
knowledge, problem solvers, and
problem finders.
4. When and Where
is Governor’s School held?
The 2014 Summer Sessions will be held
in June and July.
Traditionally, there are two sites:
East campus site : Meredith College in Raleigh
West campus site : Salem College in Winston-Salem
5. The Governor’s School of NC offers a unique
residential experience to academically or
intellectually gifted high school students
nominated in one of eleven areas:
English Math
Natural Sciences Spanish
Social Sciences French
Dance Drama
Art
Instrumental Music
Choral Music
6. Governor’s School Programs
10th graders:
You may only apply for and attend Governor’s
School in the areas of Performing/Visual Arts,
which includes: Dance, Choral Music or
Instrumental Music.
11th graders:
You may apply for Performing/Visual Arts (those
listed above plus Art and Drama) or Academics.
If you are planning on applying for and
attending for Academics, you must have earned
92% or better on an EOC Test in that academic
area, along with the aptitude test of 92% or
better. Your counselor will help you determine
your eligibility areas. Some testing may be
needed.
7. 10th Graders
The Performing Arts Program requires a
paper application in addition to an
audition.
Practice, practice, practice for your
auditions, which will be held in February of
2014.
8. 11th Graders
If you are applying for the Academic
program, you will only need to submit the
paper application.
If you are applying in the Arts, please
practice, practice, practice for your
auditions, which will be held in February
of 2014.
9. Governor’s School FAQs
**Roommates are assigned and students must attend
campus assigned to.
**Programs at both campuses are the same with these
exceptions:
Governors School East has Spanish and Orchestra
Governors School West has French and Wind Ensemble
**Performing/Visual Arts may only audition in one area.
Audition information will be mailed to the respective
nominees during January and February with all
instructions. Meredith College will be the audition site.
10. More Information:
Governor’s School is a 5 week commitment and
students will be expected to stay the entire time
should they be selected to attend. Students will only
be allowed to come home the third weekend of the
session.
Please know that even though your child will be on a
college campus, there will be an honor code and a
student handbook (mailed with acceptance letter if
chosen).
Rules are expected to be followed and are taken
seriously.
If your nominated student receives Out of School
suspension or a violation/citation of more that a
traffic ticket they will be ineligible to continue the
Governors School process.
***Tuition fees will be covered by NHCS.

12. Application Packet
Please read your packets completely and begin to
work on essays, awards and honors lists, and decide
what area you want to compete in. (Your school
counselor will assist you, if needed.)
Make sure that you get 2 recommendation letters and
that they are sealed and/or mailed to your school’s
counselor at your respective high schools. At least one
letter should be from a teacher in the area that you are
applying for. (Allow your teachers at least a week to
get the letters completed.) These must be signed, NOT
submitted electronically to your counselor.
Refer to the timeline on the next slide OFTEN.
Applications will be due at your high schools in the
guidance area on October 21, 2013 at 3:00 PROMPTLY
to your lead counselor. No late applications will be
accepted.
