After the Stock Market Crash on October, 27th, 1929, Massive unemployment swept the Nation and the world at an unprecedented pace. Although it was originally thought to be more of a mild recession, unemployment had risen from 8 to 15 million or roughly 1/3 of the non-farmer workforce with no end in sight.
Economic pressure was felt in every area of the country. In addition to many farmers losing their farms due to sinking economic conditions, poor southern tenant farmers and sharecroppers struggled to survive as their crops diminished due to terrible environmental conditions such as drought and grasshoppers
Desperate families with nothing left to lose, packed up their belongings in their car and headed to California in search of work and a better life. The road wasn’t always easy. Cars ran on bald tires using whatever they had on hand for spare parts. If the cars broke down completely, families ended up walking. Refugees made their homes in camps alongside the road, living in tents or under cardboard.
In 1932, 4 members of the Dearborn hunger march were shot and killed when 1000 soldiers accompanied by tanks and machine guns evicted vets living in the Bonus Army Camp in Washington, DC
During his term as president FDR used radio to communicateto and calm a troubled nation. His first “chat” on the banking crisis took place March 12th, 1933 with 29 more broadcasts to follow. In order to reach the largest audience, his broadcast would start at 10:00pm eastern hoping to have listeners from the east before they went to bed and from the west after they got home from work. In addition he used short stories, anectdotes and analogies to explain complex issues
