Some reminders for rescuing a stray dog

No good deed goes unpunished. This adage rings quite true for even the pet rescuer who has only the best
intentions for a stray dog. Some dog rescue attempts have failed miserably because of inexperience and lack of
knowledge when it comes to this matter. Today, Janique Goff Madison
(https://sites.google.com/view/janiquegoffmadison) shares some reminders for rescuing a stray dog.
1. Anticipate aggression
Expect that the object of the rescue attempt is
probably not in a normal frame of mind. Most stray
dogs have been foraging the streets for scraps for a
few days if they’ve even had anything to eat at all.
They might resist human presence due to any
number of experiences they might have had before,
human hostility being one of them. Approach the
animal with more understanding, especially if it feels
threatened.
2. Bring your equipment
Don’t come in empty-handed when approaching
what could be a distressed animal. For most rescuers,
having the animal on a dog catching pole is quite a
handy tool. Because of some natural resistance,
however, the best practice in winning the trust of the
animal is to make it more familiar with a harmless
leash. Once the animal responds positively, that’s the
only time that to put the leash on the dog’s neck.
3. Bring water and food
To a stray dog, whatever food given could well be the
only meal that the animal is having in days. Janique
Goff Madison notes that animals tend to act more
reasonably around a person if they gave them food.
This does not always work like a charm, but in any
case, it is sure to provide the animal in distress a
certain amount of relief that it needs very much.
