Do I need Event Planning Certifications?

If you want to become an event planner, you may have heard contradicting information about the
necessity of earning event planning certifications. Many individuals struggle with the decision on
whether or not to become a certified event planner at some point during their careers. Knowing the
pros and cons associated with event planning certifications can help you make up your mind whether or
not you should look to get certified as an event planner.

What is Event Planning Certification?

In order to make an informed decision about whether or not you should become certified in event
planning, you need to understand what event planning certification actually is. Within the event
planning industry, there are several trade organizations that offer certification courses to help you
become an expert in a specific field of event planning. Taking one of these courses will allow you to gain
the knowledge necessary to claim yourself as an expert event planner within a specific discipline of
event planning.

Why you Should Consider Getting Certified

With several different certification courses out there, the temptation is great to join as many
certification courses as possible. By taking several of these courses, you will be well versed in all aspects
of event planning. When you are able to say you are a certified event planner in every discipline of
event planning, future employers may be attracted to your well-roundedness. Also, these certifications
can help further your career with your current employer as they will start to give you more
responsibilities when you have more certifications.

Being able to further your career is the biggest reason why you should consider getting certified in
several different areas of event planning. Even if you do not have specific work experience in a
particular area of event planning, these certifications will help you prove to your current and future
employers that you have the knowledge and skills necessary to become an effective event planner.

Is Event Planning Certification Really Necessary?

Now that you know why one would consider getting certified as an event planner, you need to
determine if it is the right course of action for you to take. If you are just getting started in the event
planning industry, you probably do not want to waste your time and energy attending event planning
certification courses. During the early stages of your career, it is more important that you gain as much
real world experience as possible to not only become a better event planner but to also determine
whether or not you truly enjoy the profession. If you do in fact want to be an event planner for the rest
of your career, you can then join several certification programs to further your career and move up the
corporate ladder.
Understanding the needs of your current employer can also help you determine whether or not it is a
smart career move for you to take several certification courses. If your employer shows an interest in
promoting individuals with the most experience and professional certifications, you will want to enroll in
these courses to show to your employer that you have what it takes to help the company reach its goals.
Paying close attention to your own company’s corporate culture will help you determine whether or not
event planner certifications are necessary in order to achieve a promotion.

If you have thought about becoming an event planner, you may have wondered what level of education
you need to achieve your goal. While individuals just getting started in the event planning industry are
better off gaining as much real world experience as possible, those who have been in the event planning
world for several years may benefit from obtaining event planning certifications. These certifications
can help you become an expert in a specific area of event planning, which will make you more
employable in the event planning world.
