Introduction
James Frizzell, DDS, has owned and operated an independent dental practice in
Niagara Falls, Ontario, since 1993. Through his practice, Dr. James Frizzell serves
as a dentist to patients of all ages, including those in their later years.
Just as an individual's medical needs change with advancing age, so do his or her
oral care needs. The older adult is more susceptible to gum disease, which places
the person at an increased risk of tooth loss. Statistics suggest that approximately 23
percent of individuals aged 65 to 74 have severe periodontal disease, which is
characterized by the receding gums and bone deterioration that ultimately cause
irreversible decay on the roots of teeth.
In addition to decay, cavities forming on the crowns of teeth can lead to tooth loss, an
issue so prevalent that, according to the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC),
around 25 percent of individuals 60 years of age or older have lost all of their natural
teeth. Many such patients adapt to their loss of natural teeth by wearing dentures,
which can in turn increase risk for stomatitis, thrush, and other infections caused by
bacteria buildup in the mouth.
Advanced age may also place a person at higher risk of dry mouth and tooth
discoloration, among other conditions. A dentist experienced in treating older
individuals can discuss these risks and recommend preventive or treatment
measures, as appropriate.
