Health professionals can play a key role in preventing and recognizing signs of abuse in both children and adults. A forensic dentist, for example, can identify signs of abuse within the oral cavity. These patterns might include fractured incisors (which could indicate repeated trauma) or bite marks. Often, bite marks are visible on unexposed areas that are not covered by clothing. In addition to recognizing evidence of child abuse or neglect, forensic dentists can also identify signs of elder abuse, including bruises and other injuries to the orofacial region. After analyzing injury patterns, a forensic dental team documents the injuries through accurate, high-quality photographs that should be included in legal written case reports.
