ArtsTech Meetups, the Upgrade Network, DorkBot, and other self-organized groups are providing a great social forum for museum professionals, curators, fans, innovators and artists to collaborate and meet in a physical social space. In this session, we'll look at how these unaffilliated groups are contributing to the greater social fabric of the arts scene and discuss how institutions are collaborating with these loosely organized networks.

One of the key differences and advantages networks have is that we can facilitate collaboration across organizations.\n
Many of these organizations are helping produce NEW art. \n- Turbulence commissions net art. \n- Rhizome has helped connect artists working w emerging media since 1999\n- Dorkbot is a loose collective and is in \n
Upgrade! is an international, emerging network of autonomous nodes united by art, technology, and a commitment to bridging cultural divides\n\nWe...”met in a New York bar in 1999; moved to a pizzeria; upgraded to Eyebeam in 2000;”\n

Zero1 was launched by Andy Cunningham to encourage creativity at the intersection of art and technology and to produce a major festival celebrating this creative intersection. Zero1 produces one of the largest Arts+Technology biennial in the US and has produced 4 biennials.\n

ArtsTech and other groups (like MCN) have helped arts professionals build their knowledge-base and inspire each other.\n
Networks are emergent and necessary. \n\nThey meed unmet needs of organizations and individuals. How can networks support these unmet needs? What kind of programming would you like to see? \n
